The Radiation Protection Group within the Environment, Safety & Health Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Postdoc Radiation Protection position.

Description of division
The Environment, Safety & Health Division, reporting to the associate Director of ESH and Quality, is responsible for activities connected to safety (radiological safety, occupational safety, fire protection, emissions etc.) of people on-site as well as for the public. The ESH Division consists of two groups: The Radiation Protection (RP) Group and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. In addition to the two groups, there is staff working with radiation safety, safety training and environment reporting directly to the Head of Division.

Description of main responsibilities

During 2016, ESS has developed a dose assessment model in order to calculate the doses to the public in case of a radiological accident at ESS. The model has been used for accident scenarios able to occur during operation, that have been reported in the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) to SSM, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. During 2019, this model has been implemented into a comprehensive sofwtware, ESS Doctor, which will be used for the next PSAR application to SSM and to perform calculations in case of an emergency.

The position includes the following task and responsibilities:

• To support the person responsible for the ESS accident dose assessment model. This includes possible updates due revisions due to research findings, comments from SSM etc.
• To conduct and report dose calculations for revised or new accidents scenarios upon requested internally from different stakeholders at ESS (Target, Accelerator, NSS, ESH).
• To review dose calculations performed by other colleagues, in particular when performed with the ESS Doctor tool.
• To contribute to the development the model to be used for the dose to the workers during accident scenarios.
• To futher develop the ESS Doctor software tool, in particular to include uncertainty analysis, branching and to improve its usability in case of an emergency.
• To support the dose calculations for normal operation.
• To contribute to the work of the Radiation Protection Group.

Qualifications

You have a well-developed ability to listen, consult others and to communicate proactively with a high level of integrity. Building wide and effective networks of contacts both inside and outside the organisation comes naturally to you. We believe that you have expertise of performing calculations and modeling of dose to the public and the workers for a large-scale facility. We expect you to have a PhD in physics or engineering.

Your English skills need to be very good in both verbal and written form. Experience of working in an international collaborative environment would be an asset.

Duration & Location

The position is a fixed term position of 1 year.

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
