Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (CENE) offers unique, collective research expertise in civil and structural engineering. The research subject of Structural Engineering is now seeking a motivated researcher who will contribute to the science and technology of structural condition assessment, structural dynamics and application of composite materials.

Subject description
Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire.

Project description
This project focuses on the development of self-sensing fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (SS-FRCMs) for the dual purpose of structural strengthening and real-time health monitoring of infrastructure. The research is structured into two main areas: (1) material development and characterization to ensure optimal sensing and mechanical performance, and (2) structural evaluation of SS-FRCMs under environmental stressors such as freeze-thaw cycles and chloride exposure. Your work will contribute to more sustainable infrastructure by enabling proactive maintenance, reducing environmental impact, and minimizing the risk of unexpected structural failures.

Duties
The duties of a Postdoc primarily comprise research. You will conduct research with substantial experimental components that should be published in peer-reviewed international journals and at major conferences. The position will include supervision of PhD and MSc students, teaching and supporting in acquiring funds for future research projects from research funding agencies/councils, EU framework program or industry.

Qualifications
To be eligible for this postdoctoral position, you must hold a PhD in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, with a specialization relevant to structural strengthening and materials performance. The degree must be completed at the time of appointment. A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence.

The following qualifications and experience are required:

• A proven research background in structural strengthening, with focus on systems such as Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP), Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrices (FRCM), or similar techniques.
• A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences in the field of structural strengthening, rehabilitation, or related areas.
• Demonstrated experience in experimental research, particularly in the mechanical characterization and performance evaluation of strengthening systems under static and/or cyclic loading.
• Laboratory experience, including test planning, instrumentation (e.g., strain gauges, LVDTs, DIC), execution of large-scale tests, and data analysis.
• Solid understanding of structural behavior, failure mechanisms, and durability issues of reinforced concrete and strengthened systems.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and oral, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The following qualifications will be considered meritorious:

• Experience with full-scale structural testing and/or collaboration with industry or public infrastructure stakeholders.
• Experience supervising MSc theses or mentoring junior researchers.
• Knowledge of sustainability-related issues in strengthening interventions, such as life-cycle performance or the use of low-carbon materials.
