We are recruiting highly motivated postdocs to be part of an EU-financed project targeting photochromic probes for fluorescence microscopy. The node at Chalmers will be responsible for the design and the spectroscopic characterization of the target compounds, using absorption and fluorescence techniques.

Information about the research and the project
The secret life of molecules is the main theme of our research and teaching at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We are studying how small and large molecules can be produced, their interaction with one another in material or in living cells, and how they can capture and convert energy. The projects are chosen to fulfill the requirements of the highest scientific standard, and the know-how they create on a molecular level is generally of importance for solving many advanced problems as well as for future practical applications. The span of potential applications is extremely wide: from life sciences to materials sciences.

Andréasson research group is focusing on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of molecular photoswitches (photochromic molecules). Today, the main focus is on how to gain photonic control of energy transfer (FRET) reactions in these systems, which in turn will change the fluorescence properties. We use this scheme for many different applications, and the successful candidate will partake in an EU-financed consortium project aiming at boosting the performance of probes for fluorescence microscopy by cleverly designed photochromic constructs.

Now we invite applications for a Postdoc position (2-3 year position) in the field of optical spectroscopy. In this multidisciplinary project, fluorescent molecular photoswitches will be designed, synthesized, and characterized using spectroscopic and microscopy techniques. The daily work will be performed at Chalmers University of Technology, in close collaboration with University of Gothenburg (Sweden), University of Huelva (Spain), and KU Leuven (Belgium).

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. In this position, you will focus on the design and the spectroscopic characterization of the target compounds. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, in both the steady-state and the time-resolved regimes, will be the main techniques.

Qualifications
The applicant for this Postdoc position should have a PhD degree in physical chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, or an equivalent education, no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Skills in absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy (steady-state and time-resolved techniques such as TR-SPC and ns transient absorption) are mandatory.

Meritorious qualifications:
Experience in working with photochromic compounds (molecular photoswitches).
Experience in studying energy transfer (FRET) reactions.
Previous Postdoc experience.

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest departments at Chalmers. We represent a broad field of fundamental and applied research and education within chemistry and chemical engineering. Our research activities reach from fundamental chemistry, chemistry at the interface of biology and medicine, materials science, renewable energy, to chemical engineering processing, material recycling, nuclear chemistry, as well as theory and modelling. We are committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level.

Academic freedom, interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship and making societal impact, are key factors in our work. We strive to offer an environment where you can combine world leading research and teaching with a good work-life balance.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for 2-3 years.
