New technologies for a much greater utilization of steel slag in alternative cements to Portland cement are in focus. Modern laboratories, a close collaboration with industry professionals, and a bespoken academic support will provide excellent conditions for world-class research and career development.
Information about the research
It is well-known that currently the most developed and utilized technology to re-use metal slags for cement is the rapid cooling, e.g. granulation of blast furnace slag to produce GBS (granulated blast furnace slag), which, like cement clinker, is ground to cement fineness in a mill. However, not much effort has gone yet into the beneficiation of all the other steel slags besides granulation of blast furnace slag. However, with the recent focus on green steel and cement, there is an urgent need to develop beneficiation technology for the slags from the green steel process in Sweden. Specifically, as the blast furnaces in Sweden is gradually replaced by electric arc furnaces, there is a strong opportunity to develop beneficiation technology to make the future slags reactive as cement replacement material similar to granulated blast furnace slag. Slag beneficiation in direction of producing alternative cements to Portland cement will therefore be the main focus of this position. A successful research will enable a greater circularity between the concrete and steel industries, a further development of current standards, and adoption of technologies for lowering environmental impacts of these sectors.
The announced position will be placed in the research group Building Materials at the Division of Building Technology, which provides research and education within building materials including cement, concrete, wood, bitumen and polymer composites. The position is part of a national and international collaboration project and funded by Tillväxtverket and co-financed by European union. This project has a consortium consisting of partners from CemVision, Vattenfall, LKAB as well as RWTH Aachen University.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to conduct research and carry out the postdoc project about new types of green cementitious materials based on industrial wastes from the iron industry in collaboration with national and international partners. You are expected to influence the details of the research towards the needs of the project. You will also have the possibility to combine experimental work with theoretical modelling. As a postdoc you will be involved in teaching activities. You are expected to further develop your skills in communicating scientific results, both to the public and industry and through scientific publications to the research community.
Qualifications
The successful applicant has a good knowledge of cementitious materials and enjoys both experimental and modelling work. A suitable background is a PhD in Chemical/Materials engineering or Civil/Structural Engineering, or an equivalent degree. The PhD degree must be awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
A sound knowledge of and experience of data processing and scripting, e.g. by the use of Python or Matlab, is recommended.
You are expected to work relatively independently (although you will be a part of a research environment with several other researchers and Ph.D. students), have an ability to plan and organize your own work, to work in collaboration with others, and to be able to communicate your scientific results in English.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment. As a postdoc you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. The position is limited to maximum 2 years.
