We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our team and participate in cutting-edge research in the synthesis and manipulation of laser light at ultrashort time scales (from femtosecond to nanosecond). We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure.

Information about the research group and the Photonics laboratory
An optical frequency comb is a laser source whose spectrum is made of evenly spaced and narrow frequency lines that maintain broadband phase coherence across the bandwidth. Microresonator frequency combs (microcombs) constitute an alternative platform to femtosecond mode-locked lasers for realizing frequency combs on a chip scale . Their compactness, compatibility with standard semiconductor fabrication techniques and large (> 10 GHz) line spacing enable new opportunities in frequency synthesis and metrology: from advanced communications to radio-frequency photonics.

In the past years, our group has demonstrated microcombs based on silicon nitride with outstanding performance in terms of conversion efficiency. We have shown the potential of these light sources in the context of coherent optical communications, and explored nonlinear physics in an arrangement of linearly coupled cavities (Nature Photon. 15, 305 (2021)). This new arrangement gives outstanding power conversion efficiency but there many aspects that are not understood yet, especially with regards to the ultimate performance limits (phase noise, frequency noise, etc.). As a postdoctoral fellow you will investigate new research avenues based on this platform, comprising the exploration of different operational wavelengths for optical spectroscopy, the realization of phase-coherent lightwave communications or the synthesis of high-frequency microwaves.

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for microcomb research and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture our own photonic devices based on silicon nitride.

Major responsibilities
As postdoctoral fellow, your main responsibilities are to lead and conduct research, and guide junior PhD students. You will have the freedom to contribute with your ideas, and collaborate with other senior researchers and professors. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). To be suitable for this position you need to have experience from supervising junior students (PhD or Master) and experience with laser frequency combs and/or silicon photonics. Knowledge of standard finite element solvers and computational techniques in nonlinear optics (generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Lugiato-Lefever equation, etc.) is meritorious.

We value an ability to work independently in combitaion with a collaborative attitude. Self-motivation and a desire to solve complex probems are also important personal qualities for this position.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years. Starting date is negotiable.
