This post-doc position is an opportunity for an independent and curious person. You are interested in microbial communities in the environment and in engineered systems such as fish farms. Although you will focus on research, the position is also an opportunity to participate in teaching and interact with students at both the undergraduate and master level.

Project description
The research project is about microbial communities in fish farms. The microorganisms that the fish are exposed to are likely affected both by the microbial communities in the intake water and by the environmental conditions within the farm. We want to understand how this varies during a year. The goal is that knowledge generated in this project will help us to design fish farms that keep the fish healthy. In the project, we will collaborate with fish farmers and the Swedish Veterinary Agency.

Information about the division and the department
The project will be carried out at the division of Water Environment Technology (WET), Dept. of Architecture and Civil Engineering. As a post-doctoral researcher, you will be part of the research area in Wastewater Management and Environmental Biotechnology. You will be working together with three senior researchers as well as PhD students working in adjacent fields. Our research spans from microbial ecology theory to process engineering. We also develop new biotechnological processes and investigate the fundamental science behind these processes. Examples of research areas where we have projects are anammox, fermentation, microbial electrochemistry, aerobic granular sludge, moving bed biofilm processes, and recirculating aquaculture systems. Often, our projects are carried out in cooperation with municipalities, R&D companies, and consultants.

Major responsibilities
In this project, you will analyze the microbial communities in samples collected from fish farms. You will use various molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics tools to study how the microbial communities depend on season and local conditions at the farms, and how they are related to fish health.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
You have a PhD in a relevant field and you have experience of techniques such as DNA extraction and PCR, as well as experience interpreting results from amplicon sequencing and/or metagenomics experiments. You are a person who can work independently and lead the writing of scientific articles and reports.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
The post-doc position is for 2 years, which can be extended with one more year if additional funding can be secured.
