Ultimately, the project will contribute to increased knowledge on the importance of cracks in reinforced concrete structures, thus ensuring safety in the long term yet avoiding too strict demands. Thereby, the results will contribute to improved durability of reinforced concrete structures, reduced use of resources, lower life-cycle costs for civil engineering structures, and contribute to a more sustainable society.
Project description
The aim of the Postdoc project is to contribute to increased knowledge on the complex interaction between cracks and reinforcement corrosion. In current codes, the crack width on the concrete surface is limited, as a way to try to avoid or at least delay reinforcement corrosion and thus obtain durable structures. There is also a large focus on cracks and crack widths at inspections of existing structures. However, despite major research efforts, the effect of cracks on durability is debated. We know that in a chloride-containing environment, corrosion tends to develop fast at the intersection between transverse cracks and reinforcement bars, and results in pits on the reinforcement bars. However, the corrosion pits seem to grow at a slower rate over time, while they increase in number. These observations have major implications for the structural safety, as corrosion patterns with few, deep, narrow pits are significantly more detrimental than many scattered, shallow pits, both for load-carrying and deformation capacity. Moreover, corrosion induces splitting cracks that affect the corrosion process. This in turn increases the complexity of the interaction between cracks and corrosion damage.
In this project, we will conduct long-term tests, designed to complement existing test results, and supplement an existing database with additional information from the literature. The results will be analyzed through physical modelling of the entire corrosion process. Further, we will formulate hypotheses on possible correlations between crack morphology, exposure and corrosion characteristics, and apply statistical methods to test them on the collected dataset.
Research environment
The project will be carried out in collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The position is placed at Chalmers in the research area Concrete Structures, which is part of the Division of Structural Engineering at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Concrete Structures at Chalmers is internationally well-known for its expertise in assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures. Other focus areas are the use of innovative materials in concrete such as fibres and textiles, and industrial construction. Equality, diversity, and inclusion are core values in our research environment. We highly value the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As a Postdoc our group, you will receive full support from your supervisor and colleagues.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to carry out the Postdoc project and to conduct research in concrete structures. You will have the opportunity to influence the details of the research towards the needs of the project, with the possibility to combine experimental work with theoretical modelling. As a Postdoc you will be involved in teaching activities at the department. You will develop your skills in communicating scientific results both to the industry and the public, and through scientific publications to the research community.
As a Postdoc you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. The position is limited to 2-3 years. A maximum of 20% of your time may be spent on departmental duties, mainly teaching of undergraduate courses. The remaining time will be spent on the research. You are expected to connect with the other researchers and PhD students in the research environment, and to communicate your research both internally and externally.
Qualifications
Being a successful applicant, you have a good basic knowledge in concrete structures, demonstrated by graduate and undergraduate courses. We value if you are skilled in experimental work, have experience from data processing, statistical analyses, and numerical analyses of reinforced concrete structures. Experience of work on deterioration mechanisms is beneficiary. The development of our students and Postdocs is essential for us. Therefore, we highly value if you are motivated to explore new questions, master new skills, and embrace challenges. A suitable background is a PhD degree within concrete structures or possibly building materials, or an equivalent degree.
You are expected to work relatively independently (although you will be a part of very active research environment with several other researchers and Ph.D. students), have an ability to plan and organize your own work, to work in collaboration with others, and to be able to communicate your scientific results in English verbally and in writing.
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. You will be employed for 2 years, with a possible extension up to a maximum of 3 years in total
