Department of Plant Protection Biology
The Department of Plant Protection Biology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Alnarp, is recruiting a postdoc to investigate chemosensory receptors and coupled chemosensory mediated behaviors in the insects Cydia pomonella and Drosophila suzukii.

The Department of Plant Protection Biology is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing the Units of Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection, providing excellent opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the departmental area. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. Applied plant protection research is carried out in collaboration with industry and focuses primarily on the development of environmentally sustainable pest and disease control strategies for agriculture and horticulture.

Project:
Cydia pomonella and Drosophila suzukii are taxonomically diverse insects that both cause damage to horticultural fruit products, apples and berries respectively. Both are present in Sweden and throughout Europe.

The project aims at the functional characterization of chemosensory receptor proteins that are expressed in the larval stages of the aforementioned insect species and furthermore, the behavioral responses mediated by the larval-expressed receptor proteins. The methodological approach includes molecular cloning of the receptors, heterologous expression of the receptors in cell culture system and subsequent functional assay, as well as larval olfactory physiology and behavior bioassays relevant to each species. The project is closely linked to other ongoing projects on the study of chemosensory receptors in the adults of these species. The project is organized in collaboration with the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where part of the work will be performed.

Duties:
The recruited postdoc is expected to organize and conduct experiments independently, to help the set-up of an heterologous expression method based on HEK cells and to write scientific articles for presentation and publication. Scientific networking and communication with stakeholders is part of the assignment.

Qualifications:
The position is intended for junior scientists and has expertise in molecular biology and heterologous cell culture expression assays as well as in-depth knowledge of horticultural pest insects. The ideal candidate has a publication record in cloning of chemosensory receptors and their functional characterization by the use of HEK cells. In addition, experience working with insects, including insect olfactory physiology (electroantennogram, single sensillum recordings (SSR) and GC-SSR) and behavioral assays are important qualifications for this position.

Place of work:
Alnarp and Switzerland

Form of employment:
Fixed term employment maximum 2 years and URA 1 year

Extent:
100%

2019-12-01
