Postdoc position in Assessment and mitigation of underwater radiated noise from ships

Underwater radiated sound from antropogenic sources have emerged as an increasing threat to the life in the oceans. The continuous sound emitted from ships, boats and off-shore wind power installations has up to now been unregulated, but since 2022 there's a framework put in place for the EU nations to create good environmental status with respect to underwater noise in their respective waters. BluEcho is a cross-disciplinary research project in EU developed to support this process by studying the environmental impact of noise emissions, how to most effectively mitigate them, and what's the economic impact of the emssions and what incentives could be put in place to promote mitigation.

Project description
We are offering a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of underwater radiated noise from ships and boats. The objective is to assess and analyse different means to mitigate the noise emissions, through design and technical solutions as well as from a change in operation of a vessel. Part of the work will incude developing CFD-based analysis tools to be able to perform this analysis. The computed sources will be used within the BluEcho project as input into sound map computations and to derive impact scenarios concerning both environmental impact as well as economic costs to implement or enforce different mitigation solutions.

To achieve this objective, several components are necessary to master. The flow around the vessel and its propulsion system will be studied and characterised using scale resolved CFD (DES and LES). A particular focus will be on propeller cavitation as this is considered the dominating noise source. The assessment of radiated noise based on these simulations is not trivial and need further development in order to reliably separate the different measures studied. Experience in acoustic analysis will be merituous, as well as experiences in marine propulsion systems and simulation of cavitating flows. In addition to the interdiciplinary research team in the project, industry stakeholders are engaged in proposing solutions and measures and discuss the implementation.

Information about the department
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. It offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. The department continuously strives to establish and develop collaboration between academia, industry, and society, for improved knowledge transfer in both directions. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support. The project is also part of the Chalmers research area: Ocean

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved departments and companies. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in the research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

You like to work independently and you plan and think strategically. You are creative and like to put new ideas into practice. You have a solid interest in fluid dynamics, and an ability to perform simulation work of high quality. You like to work in interdisciplinary projects and you have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people of different backgrounds. We also believe that you are a motivated person, with a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to learn more and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research, research communication and project management.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
The position is full-time temporary employment. It is limited to a maximum of two years, with a possibility for extension to a third year if funding becomes available.
