Join us at Chalmers University of Technology, where you'll work in tight collaboration with GKN Aerospace in an interdisciplinary research team in the area of machining of jet engine components. This postdoc position offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative solutions in a collaborative environment.
Project overview
The project focuses on Surface Integrity assessment, considering influence of microstructure, manufacturing process parameters and other factors. The project combines material characterization, process simulation tools, in-process sensors and machine learning techniques to improve predictions of Surface Integrity. As a postdoctoral researcher you will join a dynamic research team working, where you will be responsible for material characterization and design of experiments. This project builds on recent developments in physical process modeling.
Information about the division and the department
The Materials and Manufacturing division within the Department of Industrial and Materials Science (IMS) at Chalmers University of Technology covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing and characterization. We use a range of technologies, including powder metallurgy, electroplating, additive manufacturing and machining, supported by material characterization techniques.
Main responsibilities
Your main responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group.
The primary responsibilities will include:
• Design of experiments, material characterization
• Developing and refining data driven process models for Surface Integrity assessment
• Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to validate model predictions through experiments
• Contributing to publications in high-impact journals and presenting research findings at international conferences
The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.* The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Solid Mechanics, or a related field, with experience in machining.
Mandatory experiences and skills:
• Demonstrated strong expertise in material characterization
• Demonstrated expertise in machining processes, including both theoretical and applied aspects
• Programming skills and proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for data analytics
We are looking for someone with a collaborative approach and strong written and spoken English skills, who can contribute effectively to multidisciplinary research. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Meriotorious experiences and skills:
• Prior research in mechanics of metal cutting, e.g., force and temperature modeling
• Background in experimental validation and data analysis related to machining including signal and image processing
• Experience with machining simulation tools
• Experience in fracture mechanics and fatigue, and/or Surface Integrity and its impact on fatigue properties
• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
