Department of Clinical Sciences
The Department of Clinical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for undergraduate and post-graduate education and research within anesthesiology, diagnostic imaging, veterinary nursing, veterinary epidemiology, comparative medicine, surgery, medicine, clinical pathology, reproductive biotechnology and domestic animal reproduction.

The Department of Clinical Sciences, Section of Ruminant medicine at SLU, invites applications from PhD holders for a 2-year position as post-doc researcher.

Research within the section focuses e.g. on infectious diseases in cattle. We work in cattle herds and in laboratories, with mapping of the epidemiology, spread, immunology, disease mechanisms and persistence of pathogens, as well as with development and evaluation of vaccines and laboratory tests. The overall goal is to develop control methods, such as vaccines, treatments and evidence-based biosecurity measures.

This position will focus on two objectives

* To evaluate a modified bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) PreF vaccine adapted to the neonate calf, in vivo.
* Identify markers of antagonism or synergism of Influenza D Virus (IDV) during co-infection with other bovine respiratory pathogens. Establish RT-qPCR systems for screening of the markers in vitro and in vivo.

Research is performed in collaboration with national and international partners, such as the National French National Institute for Agrigultural Research and Environment, The Pirbright Institute and National Veterinary School of Toulouse.

The post doc is expected to (1) perform research according to a research plan, (2) actively, and through his/her own initiatives, contribute to the research of the section within the field and (3) investigate the possibilities to apply for external research. The work may include supervision of students at all levels.

A PhD-degree within an area that relates to virology and/or immunology, and that was obtained within three years before the application date, is obligatory.

It is mandatory to be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral English communication skills, including a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. It is desirable to have a Swedish animal experiment license or equivalent. A thorough background as veterinarian or a comprehensive knowledge within veterinary or human medicine, immunology and/ or microbiology (bacteriology and/or virology) is a merit. Experience in work with cell culture in vitro and experimental animal work is needed.

Experience in virology, molecular biology and immunological techniques, such as RT-PCR, ELISA and mass spectrometry is considered a merit. Personal qualities such as abilities to solve problems and perform independent as well as team work will be of importance for assessment of the successful candidate.

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
