Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
We are looking for a motivated PostDoc to the research subject Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology who both independently and in collaboration with colleagues can carry out qualified research within our research group. You will work within the strategic research program CT WOOD at Wood Science and Engineering in Skellefteå. Behind the initiative are the Swedish Forest Industries Federation/Swedish Wood, the Kempe Foundations, Skellefteå Municipality and Luleå University of Technology, together with the industry.

Subject description
Wood Science and Engineering encompasses interdisciplinary research on wood materials and industrial processes in the chain from forest to finished wood product. The research areas are the anatomy of wood materials, physics, chemistry and mechanics, as well as wood processing and product development, manufacturing technology, process optimization and visualization of wood products.

Project description
CT WOOD will focus on applied research in close collaboration between universities, institutes and industry. A central task of the research within CT WOOD is to use advanced measurement technology and digitization tools to create added value by streamlining the use of raw materials in the wood value chain forest to finished product, where wood construction plays a central role. In order to be able to build fireproof wooden buildings, a thorough understanding of the basic parameters that affect the fire progression of different wooden components is needed. In the project, the possibilities of using X-ray-based computed tomography (CT) to characterize the wood material with respect to fire will be studied. There are great opportunities for industrial and international cooperation.

Duties
The research area is multidisciplinary of both scientific and applied nature. The work will include the development of methods for using CT scanning to analyze wood and other bio-based materials under fire. Specifically, you will work with experiments in a newly developed fire chamber where the fire progression can be studied in-situ with CT. The project aims to increase the understanding of fire mechanisms in wood in order to contribute to the development of robust technical solutions and wood modifications that enable fire-resistant wooden buildings. All scientific work is presented in English in the form of articles in scientific journals and at international conferences.

Qualifications
To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have a PhD or an equivalent foreign degree in Wood Technology or Wood Chemistry with a focus on process development in the woodworking industry. Your degree was completed no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, a person who has completed a doctoral degree earlier may be considered, for example in the case of various types of statutory leave.

Requirements for the position are:

• that you have documented experience of working with wood modification and chemical analysis related to organic chemistry.

It is meritorious for the position:

• If you have worked with fire protection, fire impregnation or similar areas linked to wood materials and wood construction.

The applicant should have a clear interest in chemistry, experimental studies and customary engineering issues. The applicant must be a good team player with good knowledge of English, in both oral and written presentation. Knowledge of the Swedish language is not a requirement for the position.
