Reducing deforestation is critical for efforts to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises. Yet recent years' groundswell of commitments from companies, financial institutions, and governments to make supply-chains for key forest-risk commodities-such as palm oil, soybeans, and beef-deforestation-free has had limited effects: unsustainable practices persist and deforestation rates remain stubbornly high. In this project, you will take part in the development of a new framework to evaluate environmental and social impacts of supply-chain measures for reducing commodity-driven deforestation, by critically evaluating theories of change that underpin existing interventions and constructing metrics and methods for assessing policy impacts. The project is highly transdisciplinary and the framework will be rigorously interrogated at multiple intervals by key stakeholders in demand and supply-side countries.

Project description
The PostDoc is funded by the transdisciplinary Belmont Forum project "BEDROCK - Building an evidence-base for deforestation-free landscapes: supporting equitable outcomes in and beyond commodity supply-chains", which aims to develop a conceptual and analytical framework for assessing supply-chain policy responses to deforestation and apply this framework to evaluate ongoing policy interventions in key commodity-deforestation frontiers in Brazil, Cameroon, and Indonesia. Through a system-level understanding of the impact of supply-chain interventions - based on state-of-the-art theories of change, data and methods - the project will identify "best-bet" policy portfolios which are most likely to drive down deforestation while also minimizing the risk of undesirable or unintended consequences.

The BEDROCK project is a collaborative effort involving experienced researchers across land-use science, economics, political, natural and sustainability science, from Chalmers University of Technology (Martin Persson), the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Arild Angelsen), Senckenberg Biodiversity & Climate Research Centre (Thomas Kastner), and Trase at Stockholm Environment Institute (Mairon Bastos Lima & Toby Gardner). Importantly, BEDROCK has been designed around co-development by stakeholders to ensure the relevance and uptake of policy insights generated, including an advisory board with high-level participants from across public, private and civil society actors.

More details about the project can be found here.

Information about the division and the department
The Postdoc will be placed at the Division of Physical Resource Theory, within the Department of Space, Earth and Environment at Chalmers University, and work within the land-use group at the division. The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low-carbon society for a growing population, using a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods. The division's ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multidisciplinarity in research. The Postdoc position is full-time, initially for three years, with a possibility for extension (given funding) of up to one year. Teaching may be included in the position, up to 20% of full time.

Major responsibilities
The Postdoc will be involved in all parts of the BEDROCK project, but will primarily be responsible for co-developing the assessment and design of deforestation-free supply-chain interventions with stakeholders and partner organizations in the project's three case regions: the Brazilian Amazon, Indonesia's Papua province, and the Centre Region of Cameroon. This will be done mainly through qualitative approaches, such as key-informant interviews and focus groups with local stakeholders, and will provide a qualitative complement to quantitative assessments carried out in other work packages in the project. As such, the Postdoc will contribute to a transdisciplinary, mixed-methods approach to evaluating and designing policy portfolios for deforestation-free tropical landscapes and is expected to lead on scientific publications aimed at different audiences (academics, policy-makers in consumer countries, producer-country stakeholders) in collaboration with other project participants. The position will require traveling abroad frequently, including multiple visits to Brazil, Cameroon and Indonesia throughout the project, for fieldwork and engagement with producer-country stakeholders.

The Postdoc will collaborate strongly both with BEDROCK's two other Postdocs (employed with the project partners in Germany & Norway), as part of a strong multi-disciplinary core, together with senior researchers at collaborating institutions and partners in focal countries. In particular, the three Postdocs will work jointly to arrange key stakeholder activities and assure that these capture insights and provide guidance across domains (e.g., environmental, economic, political, and social), will include two month-long research stays in Frankfurt and Oslo to facilitate the research collaboration with the other lead partners.

Information about the two other open Postdoc positions in the BEDROCK project will be added here when announced.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Postdoc, you must have a PhD degree in a relevant topic (for example - but not limited to - environmental studies, sustainability science, land-use science, or political ecology). The degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.

You have excellent skills in qualitative research methods and sustainability policy analysis, with a proven publication record. Previous experience in organizing stakeholder interaction activities and in tropical deforestation and / or on land-use and governance research in one or more of the case study countries (Brazil, Cameroon, Indonesia) is meritorious, as is proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia, French, and / or Portuguese.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
