About us
The Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Theory develops models and fundamental understanding of a wide range of materials and condensed matter systems. We combine theoretical, methodological, and computational approaches - often in close collaboration with local and international experimental groups - in areas spanning materials science, nanotechnology, and energy research.
About the research project
Organic solar cells (OSCs) are a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology, but their long-term thermal stability remains a key barrier to commercialization. State-of-the-art non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have pushed efficiencies above 19%, yet achieving stable, glassy morphologies in multi-component NFA mixtures is an unsolved challenge - one that the vast combinatorial design space makes impossible to tackle by experiment or all-atom simulation alone.
As part of this project, you will develop coarse-grained molecular dynamics models to bridge this gap. Your work will focus on two core challenges in coarse-graining - representability and transferability - and will scale from neat NFAs to binary and many-component mixtures. The resulting models will be used to identify how molecular features and mixture composition govern glass-forming ability, generating concrete design rules for thermally stable OSC morphologies.
Who we are looking for
You hold a Doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field, and have hands-on experience with molecular dynamics simulation and coarse-graining methods. A background in organic semiconductors or photovoltaic materials is a strong advantage. You are comfortable working independently and are motivated by problems that sit at the interface of fundamental methodology and real-world application.
What you will do
You will develop and validate coarse-grained models for neat and mixed NFA systems, with a focus on representability and transferability, and use these models to derive design rules for thermally stable, glassy OSC morphologies. Beyond the technical work, you are expected and encouraged to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate your research findings both verbally and in writing. You will also have the oportunity to co-supervise master's and/or Doctoral students to develop your academic track record.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
