Department of Soil and Environment
A temporary post as a postdoctoral fellow is vacant at the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, the Department of Soil and Environment, Uppsala. The department is housed in the Soil-Water-Environment Centre and conducts research, environmental analysis and education for sustainable land use.
Duties:
A Postdoc position in soil and environmental chemistry is available, funded by the Tuffo project "Development and test of nano zero-valent iron for in-situ treatment of anoxic arsenic contaminated groundwater". In this project we will explore the possibility of using nano-sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the remediation of anoxic aquifers severely contaminated with As(III). Of particular interest is to investigate how different degrees of sulfidation of nZVI are affecting the efficiency to immobilise As(III) in the subsurface. The research will involve mainly work in the laboratory as well as designing and performing a pilot-scale experiment at a contaminated site. The postdoc will work in an integrated project group involving leading researchers in environmental chemistry (SLU and Stockholm university) as well as major Nordic environmental consultants and contractors (Sweco and NIRAS). Advanced analytical methods for the characterization of nanoparticle properties are available at SLU, including dynamic light scattering (DLS), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and field flow fractionation (FFF) coupled to ICP-MS. The research group at SLU has a strong expertise and track-record of structural characterisation work using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and measurements at the Balder beamline at the MAX IV synchrotron facility are being planned for this project.

The position will be situated at Department of Soil and Environment, SLU, housed in the Soil-Water-Environment Centre in Uppsala. Soil chemistry is a central topic for the department with many active employees and this activity has recently expanded towards engineered nanomaterials in soils including the analytical chemistry required for this work."

Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in a subject field of relevance for this research area, e.g. soil science, environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, geochemistry, or inorganic chemistry. The Ph.D. degree should have been obtained within a maximum of three years before the final application date. Previous research experience in the field of nanoparticles and X-ray absorption are of merit, but not required.
