MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's largest university colleges with 14 000 students and 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programs fall into one of four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and engineering. The MDH research often takes the form of co-creation with external partners on the regional, national and global levels, with the aim to generate useful solutions for societal development.

The position is to be hosted by Embedded Systems (ES), which is the most research-intensive research environment at MDH and a national leader in embedded-systems research. Research at ES has a dominating focus on embedded software, with world leading competence in embedded-software development and real-time systems modelling and analysis. Internationally, ES has extensive co-operation and is known for its research as well as its strong links with industrial partners, such as ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson, Scania and Volvo, as well as many smaller companies. ES provides a stimulating international research environment, characterized by its cooperative atmosphere, openness, and team spirit - a great environment for a researcher to grow in; with a mix of established and young researchers, several of which are employed or funded by industry.

Position description
The focus of this post-doc position is to conduct research into efficient safety certification of collaborating cyber physical systems, with specific focus on autonomous construction machinery.

The selected researcher will work in the project "SUCCESS' which aims to make significant contributions to the assurance of the safe design and operation of industrial robotics and automation systems (RAS), and is part of the 'Assuring Autonomy International Programme' (AAIP) initiative funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation and the University of York to spearhead research, training and standards in the safety of RAS. The SUCCESS Project at MDH is selected as a demonstrator project for AAIP and has Volvo Construction Equipment and Safety Integrity AB as partners.

You will develop new risk models and assurance rules (some of which are amenable to automation) for updating risks and confidence pre-deployment as well as during operational phase, thereby realising the notion of dynamic safety cases. You will validate the project deliverables via the demonstrator developed in collaboration with project partners, mainly Volvo CE. You will disseminate the project results through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities; and you will contribute to a future Body of Knowledge comprising state-of-the-art techniques, methods and processes for the engineering, assurance, regulation, deployment and operation of RAS.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in computer science or software engineering.

A good understanding of safety analysis and assurance methodologies is a prerequisite for this position. Software modelling and analysis skills, exposure to safety standards, highly developed communication skills, and experience of developing software tools are highly desirable. Experience with Robotic Operating System (ROS) and safety case argumentation using GSN or other formalisms will be considered as added merits.

Essential personal attributes for this position include attention to detail and commitment to high quality, collaborative ethos, interest in and enthusiasm for the subject matter of the project, positive attitude, and ability to plan and prioritize your own work in order to meet deadlines. You will have experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, and of writing up research work for publication in high-quality venues; and ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently using own initiative.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Merit
An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in collaboration with industrial partners as well as experience from working in projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial goals.
