Project description
Accelerated depletion of natural resources and the enormous carbon dioxide emissions caused by the construction industry necessitate novel architectural design approaches involving reuse and renovation of existing buildings and components. Simultaneously, new digital technologies and novel biomaterial solutions open unprecedented possibilities for tomorrow's circularity-oriented architectural design. In the "Twin Re-Fab" project, we will aim to establish digital workflows supporting architectural design of renovation and reuse interventions. The objective is to demonstrate how the geometric data about building components can usefully guide the design and execution of various fabrication processes supporting reuse and renovation, such as additive manufacturing and building component assembly. The overarching purpose is to enable more circular architectural design, based on combining existing and new building components, in line with the new principles of repurposing, recycling and reuse. Because the project assumes the use of robotic technology on the construction site, or in its proximity, the larger gains can embrace minimized human labor and transportation costs, therewith contributing to lowered CO2 emissions related to modern construction.
This postdoctoral researcher position will give you an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the sustainable agenda of contemporary architectural design, encapsulated within the brief of the "Twin Re-Fab" project. Our aim will be to integrate five frontline digital technologies - digital twins, 3D scanning, computational design, robotic 3D printing and machine vision - to facilitate more circular architectural renovation and reuse of existing building components and materials. The successful candidate will pursue the research agenda of the "Twin Re-Fab" project under the scientific mentorship of the project's academic leader. For aspects of knowledge crossovers between academia and industry, you will additionally collaborate with the industrial co-leader of the project as well as representatives of the project's industry partners - large Swedish architectural offices and construction companies, which forms an excellent setup for broadening your contact network and working with research that is close to practice. You will also have an opportunity to engage in your work the Master-level architecture students exploring the project-related topics, offering an exquisite chance to advance your pedagogical skills and to develop successful research-education synergies.
Information about the division and the department
The project is a unique part of the Digital Twin Cities Centre (DTCC), a national competence center hosted by Chalmers University of Technology and co-funded by Sweden's Innovation Agency Vinnova and a consortium of 35 partners from the Swedish architecture and construction sectors. Cutting-edge research is conducted in eight different research areas, covering all aspects needed to develop large- scale digital twins. The goal is to utilize the technology for new approaches in urban planning, design, architecture and digital construction. The Centre is led by the Chalmers Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and Chalmers Area of Advance Information and Communication Technology.
Major responsibilities
In your role as a postdoctoral researcher, you will plan, drive and carry out the research activities within the "Twin Re-Fab" project's research program, with the freedom to propose your own ideas and solutions that align with the project's objectives. The position will give you an excellent opportunity to directly interact with the industrial partners of the project - large Swedish architectural offices and construction companies. Research communication, through channels such as co-authored research articles, industry papers and exhibitions of prototypes, will also be a part of your assignment.
Your specific tasks will involve a combination of digital reconstruction and 3D scanning of existing architectural components, parametric 3D modeling and robot toolpath design in Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, as well as custom programming using languages such as Python. Further, you will also conduct robotically assisted 3D object registration and machine vision-enabled surface inspection of existing building components, experimental robotic 3D printing trials, qualitative and quantitative data gathering and analysis, and development of software and hardware, such as robot end-effectors and other accessories, needed for architectural prototyping explorations.
The postdoctoral researcher will have the possibility to work with the conception of the digital workflows and instrumentation essential for the successful integration of the digital technologies of the project. They will also plan and conduct the material experiments, source and digitalize the building components for the experimental trials and perform architectural prototyping rounds. You will present the architectural prototypes and other results to our industrial partners through exhibitions, workshops and similar means of public outreach.
The selected postdoc will develop their own ideas and be able to tackle complex project-related issues independently, with guidance from the scientific mentor. You will also work with the Master students in architecture, who can join our team in more basic parts of the experimental work.
Contract terms
The appointment is a full-time employment (not a scholarship) for a limited period of not more than two years (1+1). The preferred start of the position is April 2023.
