Department of Plant Biology
Research:
The research of the department focusses on plants, but other organisms such as virus, bacteria, fungi, insects, yeast cells and even human cells are also studied. Our main areas or research are: the interation between plants and microorganisms, and other forms of stress; biotechnology and metabolic engineering; growth and development of plants; the regulation of gene expression; population genetics, genome analysis and the development of breeding systems. Species in use are modellorganisms such as Arabidopsis thaliana, Physcomitrella, tobacco and yeast, and crops such as rapeseed, basket willow (Salix), potato, barley, rye, wheat and cassava.

Education:
The department is responsible for basic courses and advanced courses in general and molecular genetics; gene technology; cell biology; plant physiology; gene expression; plant breeding; plant biochemistry and biotechnology; molecular interactions between plants and pathogens. Besides, the department contributes to various other biology courses together with other departments. The courses are part of the masters programs in biotechnology and natural resources, and the programs for students in agriculture and landscape architecture, but most courses are open for external students as well.

Duties:
We are looking for postdocs/researchers for a project aimed at understanding cell fate regulation in plant cells. The work will primarily involve confocal microscopy, computational and statistical analyses of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data and standard molecular biology experiments. Research in the group is focused on using various approaches to understand how stem cells perceive endogenous or exogenous cues and how these are intertwined with internal structural and mechanical properties. Topics of active research include understanding the basic mechanisms regulating development, cell fate transitions and stress adaptation in dynamic stem cell populations and how these basic mechanisms can be used to improve crops.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent degree in the field of biological sciences. To be appointed as a postdoc, applicant should have been awarded her/his PhD no more than three years ago at the time of application. Applicant awarded PhD degree more than three years ago can be appointed as a researcher. Necessary skills include knowledge on life cell imaging, NGS analyses and protein biochemistry. Desirable skills include basic knowledge on proteolytic pathways.

You will work in close collaboration with other researchers and graduate students in a creative and inspiring environment. Therefore you should have an easy time working with others but also the ability to work independently with your own research topics. Creativity and drive are personal characteristics that are desirable due to the knowledge-driven aspect of the project. Excellent proficiency in English is required, as English is the working language in the research group. Prior experience of working with cell imaging is required. The postdocs/researchers will have large intellectual freedom to contribute to the project and is actively encouraged to pursue their own interests using available data. A demonstration of previous scientific output is highly desirable, such as a first author or joint-first author published paper.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
