State-of-the-art flat optics components based on multifunctional metasurfaces are looking to replace traditional optical components in many applications. Join a team with decades of experience in nanophotonics and contribute to projects that aim to implement new ultra-compact light-driven devices with applications in biophotonics and beyond. If you enjoy generating ideas supported by modeling and calculations, and get a kick from seeing your predictions come to life in the lab, this position is for you!

Project description
This postdoc project focuses on exploring and utilizing optical metasurfaces, a new kind of flat nanostructured optical components with a wide variety of applications. We are currently developing metasurfaces with applications in biophotonics, such as optical biosensing and microscopy [Juodènas et al, Light: Science and Appl. (2023) 12:251], as well as tiny optically driven microbots based on metasurfaces [Andrén et al, Nature Nanotech. (2019) 16:270]. The post doc position involves optical simulations based on comercial software (Comsol and/or Lumerical), optical experiments, and development of proof-of-principle devises. Depending on our needs, it may also involve some cleanroom work. You will work in a team of students and senior researchers with complementary competences ranging from nanofabrication to biophotonics applications.

Information about the research group
The Bionanophotonics group has been engaged in nanophotonics research since more than twenty years and is well-known for contributions to fields like plasmonics, surface-enhanced spectroscopy and sensing, optical antennas, optical manipulation, and metasurfaces. We focus on fundamental and proof-of-principle studies based on advanced nanofabrication, electrodynamics simulations, and optical experiments. Many of the research topics aim to contribute new methodologies to the field of biophotonics. We have access to state-of-the-art optical infrastructure, a wide range of simulations tools, and a broad academic network in photonics, nanooptics, biophotonics, and beyond. Chalmers University of Technology is a leading research institution in nanoscience in Sweden and hosts one of northern Europe's largest and most well-equipped cleanrooms dedicated to nanofabrication.

Major responsibilities
Conceptual design and optimization of metasurfaces, using Comsol or Lumerical; optical experiments and development of proof-of-principle devises based on metasurfaces.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD degree in physics, optics, nanoscience, or a related subject area not older than three years. This position requires good experience of optical experiments and/or simulations. A research background within the fields of metasurfaces, nanophotonics, biophotonics, plasmonics, optical manipulation, or a related area, is an advantage.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
