Work assignments
The project for which we are now looking for new staff concerns fundamental research within material physics, primarily theory and modelling of atomically laminated materials. We will use open data bases and high-throughput simulations to explore a wide range of known and hypothetical 2D and 3D compounds, their synthesizability and properties. This will be achieved by construction of databases and systematic evaluation of thermodynamic aspects related to synthesis and tunability of properties. The project will involve machine learning, and will be performed in close collaboration with the Department of computer science.
We have a strong track record in the discovery of both 2D and 3D inorganic materials (MXenes, 2D borides, etc.), and regularly publish in high-impact journals. We now intend to explore new materials for sustainable applications such as catalysis, energy storage, and water purification. The postdoc will perform theoretical simulations of 3D/2D materials by primarily Density Functional theory (DFT), for identification of ground state crystal structure, composition and properties, and also generate data for ML procedures. The theoretical work will be closely correlated to related experimental activities, i.e., materials synthesis, analysis, and property testing.
As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
Qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.
It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree - such as taking statutory leave - then these may be taken into consideration.
We are looking for someone with a doctoral degree in Material physics/chemistry or similar. If you have a doctoral degree in Computer Science, with additional documented education in Materials Science at graduate or undergraduate level, that is also qualifying for the position.
The applicant must have extensive experience from either theoretical (first principles) simulations of materials, or use of machine learning for investigation of materials, for example their synthesizability (stability) or properties.
Documented excellent skills in writing (publications in scientific journals of high reputation) and excellent skills in communication (English) is a requirement.
The workplace
The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) has a broad expertise and internationally leading scientists in materials science, including theory, modelling, materials synthesis, and characterization. In particular, IFM has expertise in synthesis of thin films, nanoparticles, 2D, 1D and mesoporous materials, which are characterized in our state-of-the-art laboratories with respect to structure and composition, down to atomic level, using e.g. diffraction, spectroscopy and advanced microscopy. IFM currently has about 400 employees organized in more than 10 divisions.
You will be employed in the Materials Design division at IFM. The division is divided in three research units; Materials theory, Applied electrochemistry, and Thin films and nanolaminated materials. The postdoc will be active in the Materials theory unit, but will collaborate closely with experimentalists as well as the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA)
