We are looking for a postdoc to join our team at the Division of Materials and Manufacture, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Become part of our team and contribute to exciting research concerned with Machining Systems within a collaborative and dynamic environment.
About us
At the Deparment of Mechanical Engineering we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact - shaping a resilient and sustainable world. We make impact.
The Division of Materials and Manufacture conducts research across the full value chain, from materials design and processing to advanced manufacturing and characterisation, with a strong emphasis on metallic systems. We combine interdisciplinary expertise with close industry collaboration to develop sustainable materials and manufacturing technologies.
About the research project
The postdoc will develop a digital twin prototype for tool-wear monitoring on an existing IIoT digital platform. The work combines high-frequency, time-synchronous data acquisition from external sensors (e.g., force/acoustic emission) with machine-internal signals (axis positions, spindle/drive loads) captured via an edge data acquisition layer. The candidate will implement data pipelines and analysis microservices (batch/stream and, where relevant, AI/ML algorithms) that transform the recorded "digital shadow" into wear-relevant process condition information, enabling evaluation and optimization of machining operations.
The research project is implemented within the Chalmers centre for Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next Generation Powertrain (CX).
Who are we looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
A doctoral degree in Mechanical (Production) or Electrical Engineering or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made

Experience with machining, machine tools, and signal processing
Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile including social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
Hands-on experience in machining, tribology of metal cutting, process monitoring
Previous collaborative work with industry partners

What you will do
Collaborate in a research project concerned with machining systems with close collaboration with KTH, Volvo Group and Scania
Supervise master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent
Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master's level

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
