However, due to its small and light molecular structure, hydrogen exhibits significantly different mixing and reactive properties compared to conventional fuels. In this project, turbulent mixing and combustion of hydrogen in air will be studied through optical experiments and numerical modelling to improve our understanding of fundamental processes relevant to combustion engines, gas turbines, and fire safety.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and diverse research group with an extensive network of national and international collaborators.
Project overview
The aim of this two-year project is to validate and further develop advanced numerical models (originally developed at Chalmers) for turbulent hydrogen mixing and combustion. Optical and laser-based diagnostics will be used on well-defined reference cases to deepen the understanding of hydrogen's mixing and reactivity.
Numerical work will involve established software tools, such as:
• CHEMKIN-PRO for steady one-dimensional simulations of laminar flames with detailed chemistry.
• CONVERGE for unsteady three-dimensional simulations of turbulent reacting flows.
A novel aspect of the project is the use of highly perturbed laminar flame simulations to inform CFD modelling of turbulent combustion in lean hydrogen-air mixtures.
Experimental work will be conducted in a chamber with optical access, where hydrogen-air mixtures of varying homogeneity and flow conditions will be studied at elevated pressures and temperatures. Ignition and flame properties will be analysed using advanced optical techniques such as:
• High-speed imaging
• Laser-induced fluorescence
• Particle image velocimetry
Experimental and numerical results will be evaluated and compared to refine both the models and measurement methods.
The position is based at the Division of Transport, Energy and Environment within the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. The division conducts interdisciplinary research on energy efficiency and the environmental impact of transportation. Research topics include vehicle energy converters, fuel properties and sustainability, and shipping impacts on the marine environment. A key focus is on propulsion systems for road vehicles and ships, including combustion engines, fuel cells, and electrified drivetrains. The work combines modelling and experiments and is carried out in close collaboration with industry and academic partners.
Main responsibilities
• Develop a research plan and design test configurations in collaboration with senior researchers.
• Perform numerical simulations of:
• Steady one-dimensional laminar flames with detailed chemistry.
• Unsteady three-dimensional RANS simulations of turbulent combustion.
• Conduct optical experiments on hydrogen-air mixtures using techniques such as schlieren imaging, laser-induced fluorescence, and particle image velocimetry.
• Analyse and compare experimental and numerical results.
• Lead the dissemination of results through publications in high-impact journals and presentations at international conferences.
Qualifications
• A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Sciences, or a related field, obtained no more than three years before the application deadline.
• Proven expertise in either:
• Numerical simulation of turbulent flows and/or chemical kinetics, with an interest in experimental combustion research.
• Optical and laser-based diagnostic techniques for turbulent flows and/or combustion, with an interest in modelling.
