Position description
The purpose of the position is to give the employee an early opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and to create the conditions for further acquisition of qualifications after completing the doctoral degree. The position is a temporary employment of maximum 3 years.
The position is connected to a large ongoing EU project (>50 MEuro) with nearly 40 industrial and academic partners. The work constitutes an integral part of research activities within several projects on flight electrification at FEC. Modelling and simulation of hybrid-electric aero-engine performance and environmental impact will be a key focus. The project also includes preliminary system design and mission analysis.
A large part of the work will be conducted at - or in close collaboration with - several partner organisations. The candidate is therefore expected to have expertise in energy system modelling, propulsion technology, aircraft design and mathematical optimisation, and to collaborate effectively with research institutes, industry, colleagues and other stakeholders.
The work requires initiative, independence and responsibility. The project interacts closely with other parallel projects and industrial partners, which means that strong collaborative skills are necessary. The successful candidate is expected to be able to disseminate and communicate scientific results both orally and in writing, within academia, industry and society at large. Research results will be presented at project meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Teaching may be included up to a maximum of 20% of the position.
Qualification requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Energy Technology or a closely related field.
The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. You must not previously have held a postdoctoral position in the same or a related subject area at MDU exceeding one year.
For this position, the following is also required:
•
Strong oral and written skills in technical communication and dissemination in English.
• Due to the nature of the project and the requirements from collaboration partners, specific eligibility criteria apply. In accordance with partner access policies, participation in the project requires EU citizenship.
Assesment criteria
The most suitable candidate will be selected based on a combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability, in particular the ability to carry out the research work effectively, contribute to the positive development of the research environment at MDU and deliver value to the project's partner organisations.
Merits for the position include:
•
Knowledge in energy system modelling and mathematical optimisation.
•
Knowledge in propulsion and aircraft technology, including performance and conceptual design.
•
Experience in industrial R&D or in junior academic research within related technical domains.
•
Knowledge and interest in modelling and optimisation of systems with both commercial and bespoke tools.
•
Good programming skills, for example in Matlab, C++, Fortran or Python.
•
Experience of and interest in collaboration with international partner organisations and professional representation at national and international events.
•
Interest in method development and applying methods in different domains.
In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the following personal abilities:
•
Ability to collaborate with other researchers and external partners.
•
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
•
A curious, goal-oriented, flexible, ambitious and communicative personality.
•
Interest in and/or experience from research stays at institutions other than the one where the degree was obtained.
•
Teamwork, leadership, organisational and entrepreneurial skills.
