Join us at the forefront of life science AI. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop cutting-edge, multimodal transformer-based deep learning methods to extract insight from genomic and chemical data, with applications in infectious diseases and environmental toxicology.
About us
The Department of Mathematical Science provides a creative, dynamic and innovative environment where research, education, and societal collaboration meet. The research topics in the department span fundamental and applied research to contribute to the development of a sustainable society. We are Sweden's largest mathematical department, with around 200 dedicated staff, including 65 PhD students (link 'PhD students' to https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mv/education/doctoral-studies/). We are a joint department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, combining the best of two academic worlds in the heart of Gothenburg.

At the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (link to: https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mv/research/division-of-applied-mathematics-and-statistics/), we conduct research in computational mathematics, optimisation, biomathematics, statistics, and data science with strong connections to engineering, natural sciences, and industry.

About the research project
We are looking for a postdoc in life science artificial intelligence (AI). The position will focus on using AI, particularly multimodal transformer-based deep learning models, to extract and leverage information from genomic and chemical structures. Applications include infectious diseases and environmental toxicology. The positions are initially for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position is interdisciplinary, combining state-of-the-art AI and data science with microbial genomics and chemoinformatics. The research will be done in the research group of Erik Kristiansson (http://kristiansson-research.se) at Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology, in close collaboration with the research group of Mikael Gustavsson, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg. The position will also be affiliated with the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (http://care.gu.se) and the Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies (http://fram.gu.se

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, chemistry, or equivalent. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• The candidate should have previous experience with artificial intelligence and its application in the life sciences, preferably in microbial genomics.
• Strong programming skills in Python or an equivalent language.
• Strong communication skills and experience in working in a team.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Previous experience with transformers and their application to DNA and/or chemical structures is highly meritorious.
• Since the position is within an interdisciplinary research project, an interest in collaborative research is important.

What you will do
The primary responsibility of a postdoc is to conduct research within the scope of the project. You are expected to work independently, develop your own scientific concepts, write scientific manuscripts, and to share your research results with collaborators and at international conferences. The position may, on a voluntary basis, include teaching activities (up to 20%), for example supervision of Bachelor's and Master's students.

Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years.

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
