Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

Linnaeus University is the result of a merger between Kalmar University and Växjö University.
The research activities within the Department of Biology and Environmental Science include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

The research project
Viruses are the dominant biological entity in aquatic environments and mainly believed to infect microorganisms. At the Aquatic Viral Ecology research group we work on increasing our understanding regarding the genetic diversity within viral populations and communities and how it is linked to biotic and abiotic factors. This project will mainly focus on the impact of cyanophages on the highly abundant filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea as well as the impact of different nutrient and carbon source on phage abundance and diversity. The project will use high throughput nucleic acid sequencing of viral community DNA as well as isolated phages to investigate their genetic diversity, linking them to co-variations with their hosts, and investigate the phages metabolic potential and how this affects nutrient fluxes.

Qualification requirements for the position is a PhD-degree in any of the following subjects or an equivalent subject: ecology, environmental microbiology, or environmental virology,
Further, the applicant should have knowledge regarding 'omics work and experience of work with phages infecting filamentous cyanobacteria.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include documented evidence of research experience regarding phages and aquatic virology. Experience of mesocosm work and bioinformatics knowledge regarding handling of 'omics' sequencing data is beneficial. In addition, the Post Doc should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English, be able to solve problems, and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.

Terms of employment
The position will be 100 % for 1 year, with good opportunities to be extended.
The starting date is June 1, 2017 or as soon as the position can be filled thereafter. The position is located in Kalmar, Sweden.
