Project:
The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies, SLU, Umeå, is looking for a postdoc in the project "Ecological effects of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments". Focus of the project is to study behavioural and physiological effects on aquatic wildlife that drugs in surface waters induce, and to what extent they translate into ecological and/or ecosystem effects. The postdoc will mainly study how behaviourally modifying pharmaceuticals (i.e. benzodiazepines or SSRI:s) affect physiological traits connected to intra- and inter-specific interactions (i.e. predation and competition) of wild fish from northern aquatic ecosystems in a combination of lab and field-experiments.

The postdoc will plan and execute a combination of large-scale field studies and controlled lab-experiments to get at both ecological effects in natural complex systems and the mechanisms behind the effects. Both wild fish from northern ecosystems (e.g. perch, Atlantic salmon) and model-organisms (e.g. sticklebacks, guppy) will be used to study the effects of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments. The project will be performed in collaboration with other researchers at the department of Wildlife, fish and environmental studies. In addition, the candidates are expected to participate in other ongoing research projects within the competence area Aquatic ecology.
Qualifications:
The applicant should hold a PhD in ecology, ethology, physiology, biology or equivalent. We are looking for highly motivated and team-oriented candidates with documented experience in physiology, behavioural ecology, fish ecology and/or spatial ecology. Documented statistical skills and experience of experimental design are prerequisites for the position. Experience with livetrapping and caretaking of fish, as well as experience of software for behavioural and spatial analysis will count as merits. Very good skills in written and spoken English is obligatory.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
