Project description
Wind-propelled/assisted ships have emerged as a crucial component to achieve the GHG cuts set out by the IMO, the International Maritime Organisation, for maritime transport. Harnessing wind energy, Wind Propulsion Technology can replace a part of engine power to reduce fuel consumption and emissions; this combined with alternative fuels can lead to the vision of fossil-free shipping. This is a cross-disciplinary challenge involving aero- and hydrodynamics, structures, operations, metocean conditions, and more. This research aims to improve performance and operationability of wind assisted vessels by developing innovative flow control systems to increase the thrust and operation window and reduce structural issues with the sails.

We are offering a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of active flow control for wingsail performance and operation utilising artifical intelligence/machine learning. The objective is to design innovative techniques to control the flow over the wingsails and hull and superstructure of ships in order to maximise the aerodynamic performance and reduce vibrations occuring especially in unsteady metocean conditions.

To achieve this objective, the flow around sails close to and beyond stall as well as around the hull will be studied and characterised using CFD as well as experiments. Flow control algorithms, using both passive and active systems, should be developed that are effective in a range of flow conditions for the vessel; here, machine learning/AI will be used in the design of the control system. The research group has well established cooperation with other researchers in the area of wind-assisted propulsion and flow control that will be brought into the research.

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. It offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. The department continuously strives to establish and develop collaboration between academia, industry, and society, for improved knowledge transfer in both directions. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in the research group. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved departments and companies. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
You like to work independently and you plan and think strategically.
You are creative and like to put new ideas into practice.
You have a solid interest in fluid dynamics, and an ability to perform both experimental and simulation work of high quality.
You like to work in interdisciplinary projects and you have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people of different backgrounds.

We also believe that you are a motivated person, with a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to learn more and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research, research communication and project management.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education as well as the ability to plan and organize the work involved.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
