As part of our ongoing activities within Chalmers Railway Mechanics (CHARMEC) we are looking for a postdoc that is willing to take a system-level perspective of railway infrastructure. You will become the key contributor for incorporating track degradation into the STEM tool developed by our collaborators in the Netherlands. The ambition is that by integrating structural, geotechnical and railway dynamical aspects in a single computational tool we can predict the current and future state of our railway infrastructure incorporating new demands from the stakeholders (higher train speeds, traffic intensities and loads).

Project overview
The aim is to improve the long-term predictions of degradation of railway infrastructure by merging time-domain Finite Element Analyses for the structure and subgrade with a vehicle model. The focus will be on incorporating accumulation models for ballast and subgrade that incorporate (cyclic) degradation. The models will be benchmarked against field data at system-level. When successful a unique physics driven tool will become available for stakeholders to create more sustainable railway infrastructure for the future.

Information about the division and the department
The multi-disciplinary research team at Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering working with railway infrastructure has researchers from Concrete Structures and Geotechnics. The research activities aim to bridge fundamental understanding and advanced modelling & testing capabilities with application in engineering practice. We are a motivated and diverse group of researchers that embrace innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to excellence.

The group has a long-lasting tradition of cooperating with key stakeholders in the construction sector including contractors, consultancy companies and the Swedish Transport Administration. We prioritise an inclusive and supportive work environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and every team member is encouraged to contribute and grow.

Main responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent.

Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two/three years.
