The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
FinEstBeaMS at the MAX IV 1.
5 GeV storage ring is a material- and atmospheric science beamline operating in the VUV and soft x-ray range of the electromagnetic spectrum and dedicated to provide high quality radiation with precisely controlled and widely variable parameters for a broad range of research. Studies at FinEstBeAMS range from the electronic structure of free atoms, molecules, clusters and atmospheric particles in a gas phase and on surfaces, to formation analysis and nanoscale characterisation of surface interfaces. The design aims to provide a two-branch beamline - one for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) surfaces and interface studies, and the other for high-pressure volatile materials experiments and photoluminescence studies. Furthermore, the design of the beamline facilitates sample transfers between two endstations, thereby providing a degree of synergy between the gas phase and solid state research.
Funding for the basic equipment and instrumentation, materials, and staff during the construction phase was provided by an Estonian and Finnish consortium, supported by the European Union.
We are looking for a postdoc candidate for a 2 year position to be a part of the beamline team and participate in the commissioning and operation of the new beamline and end stations. In this role the candidates' tasks will consist of, but will not be limited to, the following:
- Taking part in commissioning of the new beamline and end stations
- Performing maintenance work during operation
- Participating in development of new equipment
- User support and training of visiting researchers
- Taking an active part in the research projects, both in collaboration with others as well as independently
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent in Physics/Chemistry/Materials Science or similar area of relevance for the FinEstBeAMS
- Experience in using ultra-high vacuum systems
- Experience in working at a synchrotron radiation facility either as a user or a member of the staff
- Willingness for user support
- Ability to work both unsupervised and in a team
- Good command of the English language, both spoken and written.
- Experience in VUV / soft-X-ray photoemission and photo-absorption spectroscopy or photoluminescence spectroscopy is considered a merit.
- Data analysis and computing skills are considered a merit.
- Mechanical and electronics skills are considered a merit.
- Concrete and clear ideas about research and / or developmentprojects that the candidate would like to undertake during the postdoc period are considered as a merit.
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the doctoral degree or equivalent is completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
