About the Postdoc Program

We're currently looking for talented scientists to join our innovative academic-style Postdoc. From our centre in Gothenburg, Sweden, you'll be in a global pharmaceutical environment, contributing to live projects right from the start. You'll take part in a comprehensive training programme, including a focus on drug discovery and development, given access to our existing Postdoctoral research, and encouraged to pursue your own independent research in cutting edge laboratories. It's a newly expanding programme spanning a range of therapeutic areas across a wide range of disciplines.

What's more, you'll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who'll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career. This is an exciting area that hasn't been explored to its full potential, making this an opportunity to make a real difference to the future of medical science.

About the Opportunity:

Cardiovascular Renal and Metabolic Diseases (CVRM) is one of the two main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca's R&D BioPharmaceuticals, which brings together research and development teams from discovery through to late-stage development, to deliver innovative medicines to patients. Translational Sciences and Experimental Medicine (TS&EM) has the remit to bridge pre-clinical, early and late drug development by focusing on early target validation in human, driving precision medicine approaches by using bioinformatics, biomarker science and experimental medicine.

You will be part of the bioinformatics team that is advancing precision medicine concepts, and leveraging advanced in silico approaches, including, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) & data sciences (DS) to drive innovations in Early CVRM portfolio. The team works within cross-disciplinary drug project teams throughout the discovery and translational pipeline driving new target discovery, pre-clinical and clinical research. You will work closely with experts in systems biology, omics, AI/ML/DS and clinicians. She/he will be embedded in a team that works actively on innovative integrative biology approaches within cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease areas. You will have an opportunity to lead and execute a unique multiomics project for which proprietary patient centric longitudinal data sets are available, including, transcriptome, metabolome, lipidome, proteome and microbiome levels.

Essential Experience and Education:

* Relevant PhD in bioinformatics, systems/computational biology, machine learning, computer science, or a related field
* Proficiency in analysing and interpreting data from multiple omics platforms, in association with clinical, biomarker and phenotypic datasets.
* Deep expertise in bioinformatics, multi-omics integration, systems biology or computational biology, and knowledge of at least the following areas: network/pathway analysis, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, exploratory biomarker
* Programming proficiency and experience with: R/Python, Perl, Unix/Linux environment, database management systems (DBMS) and data visualization
* Demonstrated effectiveness working in a multidisciplinary team to achieve team objectives.

Desirable Qualifications:

* Experience of working on multiomics & bioinformatics projects aligned to drug discovery.
* Broad experience with mathematical and statistical techniques for analysis of big data. Classical supervised and unsupervised ML methods such as random forests, SVMs, penalized regression, KNN, clustering, dimensionality reduction, ensemble methods, Bayesian methods.
* Understanding of the biological systems and molecular signalling involved in metabolic diseases.
* Experience in solving data analysis problems with ML and/or AI to reveal actionable insights, with expertise in at least one of (i) Predictive ML/DL, with a focus on techniques revealing actionable biological insight from feature use and predictive rules, (ii) Mathematical, Boolean and/or computational modeling of human disease mechanisms, (iii) Graph and Network Biology techniques, (iv) Transfer and reinforcement learning.
* Experience of modelling drug pharmacokinetics

Skills and Capabilities required:

* Highly self-motivated, ability to generate data in an efficient and timely manner.
* Strong communication (Oral and written) skills are a must.
* Strong time management skills, with forward planning and delivery focus.
* Work as team player, creative thinking and ability to bring forward new ideas.
