PostDoc Fellow - Joint Statistical Modelling of COPD Endpoints - A Way Towards Designing Novel and More Efficient COPD Trials - Early Clinical Development.

At AstraZeneca, we believe in the potential of people who share our passion for science. By thinking boldly and working collaboratively to pursue discoveries beyond imagination, you'll develop further and faster than you thought possible. We'll complement your drive and determination to meet unmet patient needs around the world with the inspiration and opportunities to enhance your niche expertise and build your skills. So if you're curious about what science can do, come and make a difference.

ECD is the place where AstraZeneca science meets the patient. We work across the drug development phases from discovery to the late phase development organisation. It is our responsibility to take molecules into the clinic and make sure that we've identified the right patient, receiving the right dose, of the right drug, with the right safety in an area of major unmet need. We drive innovation in clinical trial designs, harness data to inform decisions and accelerate human target validation

Main duties and responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and implement novel statistical methods to analyse longitudinal and time-to-event clinical data from over 10,000 patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients with COPD experience a variety of symptoms, all severely affecting quality of life. The association between COPD symptoms and clinical endpoints is not well understood, and novel thinking is needed to improve the development of new COPD drugs.

You'll explore and develop innovative methodology to jointly model the connections between COPD endpoints, such as spirometry measurements, symptom scores and exacerbations. We'll look to you to enhance understanding of the behaviour and association of key COPD endpoints, with a possibility to answer important clinical research questions and transform the design of future clinical trials in COPD.

As this is a collaborative project across multiple functions within Early Clinical Development (ECD), support will be provided by a supervisory team, as well as by renowned experts in the field of COPD and by an experienced academic partner in statistics. We'll encourage you to present your research both internally and at external meetings, and publish your results in prominent scientific journals.

Essential requirements
PhD in statistics, applied mathematics or equivalent
Experience of applied statistical modelling
Strong computation and programming skills (in R, Mathematica or other relevant language)
Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work and communicate across disciplines
Scientific excellence as shown by previous work, publication list or references from scientific mentors

Desirable requirements
Hands-on experience of working with biological or clinical data
Knowledge and experience in survival, longitudinal and mixed effects modelling
