AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. We're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. We believe in the potential of our people and you'll develop beyond what you thought possible.

The new R&D BioPharmaceuticals organisation brings together research and development teams, from discovery through to late-stage development for Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolic (CVRM), Respiratory, Inflammatory and Autoimmune (RIA) therapy areas, and opportunistically for Microbial Sciences and Neuroscience.

You'll be in a global pharmaceutical environment but also exposed to strong rigorous academic science. For example, every postdoc has an external academic mentor to ensure we are working and publishing at the highest level in a field. What's more, you'll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who'll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career.

As a world leader in cardiovascular, renal and metabolic medicines, we're always working on innovative new drugs that will change lives across the globe. To make that happen, we employ a small molecule and new modalities research and development strategy with three priorities: heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. You'll focus your efforts on making real progress toward slowing, stopping or curing some of the most aggressive diseases that face humanity today.

This is a unique opportunity to dive into the crossroads between immunity and metabolism with great potential for scientific cross-fertilization and collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.

Heart failure severity and prognosis are associated with inflammation, immunity and metabolic alterations. You'll investigate how these processes are mechanistically linked and further dissect out causality of the identified mechanisms in vitro and potentially in vivo. One key area to investigate is how the ketone ß-hydroxyburyrate, which is associated with both heart failure development as well as the efficacy of sodium glucose cotransporter inhibitors, may influence disease development via the epigenetic modulation of macrophage activation and function.

The Post Doc Opportunity, Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

* Work collaboratively with other internal and external experts in the fields of immunity, inflammation, metabolism and heart failure to increase the understanding of the interplay between these mechanisms
* Show strong initiative in developing ideas and bringing them to functional use within AZ and externally
* Interface with scientists from across many disciplines while also being able to work independently.
* Communicate results both by presenting to global working groups within AZ and externally at conferences
* Publish the results of the research in original scientific papers in peer reviewed journals

Education and Experience required:

Essential:

* PhD or equivalent doctoral degree
* Excellent experimental and analytical skills in cellular and molecular biology
* Strong scientific background and record of publications in cardiovascular biology, immunology or cell metabolism
* Excellent organizational, communication, and have strong English writing skills
* Enthusiastic, highly self-motivated and with the ability to function independently
* Have hands on experience working with human immune cells, such as macrophages and monocytes, and basic cellular and molecular biology methods
* Have prior experience with chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)

Desirable:

* Experience with sequencing (RNAseq and ChIPseq) and bioinformatic tools
* Prior experience with small animal in vivo experiments
* Prior experience with mass spectrometry or protein binding assays

This is a 3 year programme. 2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1 year extension which will be merit based. The role will be based in Gothenburg, SE, with a competitive salary on offer. To apply for this position, please click the apply link below.
