At AstraZeneca, we believe in the potential of people who share our passion for science. By thinking boldly and working collaboratively to pursue discoveries beyond imagination, you'll develop further and faster than you thought possible. We'll complement your drive and determination to meet unmet patient needs around the world with the inspiration and opportunities to enhance your niche expertise and build your skills. So if you're curious about what science can do, come and make a difference.
Drug Safety and Metabolism - Discovery Safety
One of the major challenges in the discovery of innovative medicines is to ensure they are safe enough to test their therapeutic concept in clinical trials and provide novel treatments for patients. Drug safety is assessed throughout the pharmaceutical R&D value chain, but it is during early drug discovery when we can actively design safety attributes into the future candidate drug. As true Drug Hunting partners to our Innovative Medicines units, our global Discovery Safety department contributes to the selection of novel drug targets, identification and optimization of new chemical series as well as a range of other modalities, and selection of novel candidate drugs. We develop and apply cutting edge in silico, molecular, cellular and in vivo technologies and push the boundaries of predictive safety science with our mission in mind: to discover safe innovative medicines for the patients that need them.
Main duties and responsibilities
Keen to be part of, and contribute to, a world-class Discovery Safety organisation that applies cutting-edge science to discover safe innovative medicines for patients? This postdoctoral role offers an excellent opportunity to exploit an innovative 3D/microphysiological system/organ-on-a-chip in vitro model of the kidney to reveal cellular and molecular mechanisms of drug-induced kidney injury.
You'll collaborate with experts at AstraZeneca and our world-leading academic partners in drug discovery and safety, kidney biology and microphysiological systems. We'll also encourage you to present breaking science at key conferences and publish your work in high-impact journals thereby promoting your scientific career.
Essential requirements
PhD in toxicology, biology, physiology, medicine or similar
Evidence of a strong scientific track record
Practical experience of cell biology and advanced cell culture methods, e.g. microfluidic systems, microphysiological systems, organ-on-a-chip or evidence of independently establishing complex in vitro models
Understanding of kidney physiology and/or pathology
Excellent communication skills and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable requirements
Experience in systems toxicology, and ability to analyse large sets of complex biological data and/or computational toxicology
Practical experience of imaging, qRT-PCR, RNAseq, biomarker analysis techniques.
