At AstraZeneca, we believe in the potential of people who share our passion for science. By thinking boldly and working collaboratively to pursue discoveries beyond imagination, you'll develop further and faster than you thought possible. We'll complement your drive and determination to meet unmet patient needs around the world with the inspiration and opportunities to enhance your niche expertise and build your skills. So if you're curious about what science can do, come and make a difference.
Our Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity team offers definitive expertise to colleagues across the business. You'll help patients in areas with medical needs that aren't being fully met, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and rheumatic disorders. Right now, we're a leading figure in inhaled drug development, and our new Inhalation Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden is set to extend that lead even further.
Main duties and responsibilities
You'll focus on an exciting project: 'Dysfunctional progenitor cells in emphysematous COPD result in deficient repair and regeneration'. This project has the potential for break-through science in the area of lung regeneration and repair.
You'll conduct independent research in a vibrant research environment while teaming up with other AstraZeneca scientists to bring novel therapies to patients suffering from chronic respiratory disease. You'll have access to a spectrum of cutting edge technologies (e.g. next generation of sequencing) and work in close collaboration with world-leading expertise in COPD pathology and lung regeneration biology both within AstraZeneca and at the University of Southern California. We'll encourage you to publish in high-impact journals, and attend and present at international scientific conferences.
Key tasks will include demonstrating how the FGF10 induces the alveolar cell proliferation and repairing the emphysematous lung in PPE mouse model, as well as identifying the proliferating cell types responding to retinoid acid and FGF10 treatment in PPE mouse model and in human emphysematous lung tissue. You'll also identify the gene signatures of the proliferating cells and investigate the gene pathways in human emphysematous lung tissue.
Essential requirements
PhD and/or MD in biological science and an understanding of cellular signalling
Expertise with animal handling, standard molecular biology techniques and mammalian cell culture
A genuine commitment to medical science
Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
A proven record of work published in high impact scientific journals in a relevant field.
Desirable requirements
Experience of precision lung cut slices
Expertise in FACS based sorting
Experience of histology and transcriptomics (e.g. RNAseq technology), bioinformatics and epigenetics
Expertise in laser capture microdissection.
