At AstraZeneca, we believe in the potential of people who share our passion for science. By thinking boldly and working collaboratively to pursue discoveries beyond imagination, you'll develop further and faster than you thought possible. We'll complement your drive and determination to meet unmet patient needs around the world with the inspiration and opportunities to enhance your niche expertise and build your skills. So if you're curious about what science can do, come and make a difference.
As a world leader in cardiovascular and metabolic medicines we are always working on innovative new drugs that will change lives across the globe. To make that happen, we have focused our small molecule research strategy in diabetes on islet health and downstream complications including diabetic kidney and liver disease. You will focus your efforts on making real progress toward slowing, stopping or curing some of the most aggressive diseases that face humanity today
Main duties and responsibilities
Elucidating biological pathways involved in the pathophysiology of NASH is critical for the development of non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and for discovering novel therapies that halt the progression to end-stage liver disease. We have identified a cluster of liver microRNAs that could be involved in the pathophysiology of NASH and/or serve as biomarkers that differentiate NASH from fatty liver disease.
You'll embark on a research programme in CVMD Diabetes to elucidate mechanisms by which liver microRNAs are involved in NASH, with a focus on the role of resident liver cells and local inflammatory signalling. You'll be designing and conducting experiments, interpreting the results and communicating them both internally and externally, through presentations at meetings and conferences, and publication in peer reviewed journals.
The role is ideal for a postdoc scientist interested in working in an industrial environment and learning more about the drug discovery process. You'll be working with outstanding scientists across many disciplines and have access to state-of-the-art technology platforms in our facilities, as you strengthen expertise in disease models.
Essential requirements
PhD and/or MD in cell and molecular biology biochemistry or a related discipline and expert knowledge in investigating microRNAs biology and mechanisms of action
Proven expertise working with primary mammalian cells and cell lines (e.g. liver cells types isolation and culture)
Proven expertise using advanced molecular biology techniques in RNA and protein analysis (e.g. next-generation sequencing)
Strong organisational and communication skills (spoken and written English), and the ability to work well in a team
Proven record of research, as shown by publications in reputable scientific journals.
Desirable requirements
Expertise in genome editing (CRIPSR/cas9)
Knowledge of genetics
Knowledge of basic bionformatic approaches for data analysis
Experience in ribosomes profiling and imaging
Good understanding of the liver steatosis/NASH disease area.

As a world leader in cardiovascular and metabolic medicines, we're always working on innovative new drugs that will change lives across the globe. To make that happen, we've divided our small molecule research strategy into three priorities: cardiac regeneration, islet health in diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. You'll focus your efforts on making real progress toward slowing, stopping or curing some of the most aggressive diseases that face humanity today.
