Malmö University
Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the centre of Malmö. We have around 1,800 employees and 24,000 students. Our research and education are characterised by the role we believe a university should play in an open society - to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority.

The Department of Biomedical Science offers a programme leading to a professional qualification, Biomedical Scientist (first cycle, 180 credits), and a Masters' programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second cycle, 120 credits), as well as first and second cycle freestanding courses. The Department negotiates the multifaceted intersection between biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, and technology and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject matter. Drawing on the balance between pure and applied research, the Department has been successful in attracting funding from regional, national, and international research funding bodies. In addition, in the pursuit of possible applications, several industry funded contract research projects are currently running at the Department.

The research at the faculty is also linked to the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces, which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry.

Project description and responsibilities
At the Biomedical Science Department, we are running several projects along with industrial partners with a strong focus on biosensor development. Of specific relevance for this position are battery-less wireless bacterial infection sensors based on the Radio Frequency Identification technology (RFID). In this context, the main objective of the project is to develop RFID-based sensors that could be embedded in healthcare products e.g., wound dressings and diapers, for monitoring e.g., wound, skin and urinary infection. Beside RFID, we also work with other technologies like electronic tongues and electrochemical biosensors for monitoring lower molecular weight bio-analytes. Therefore, use of these technologies will also be considered in these projects. A more specific list of tasks that could be undertaken within the project:

• Enable wireless communication (mainly RFID/NFC, even though enabling Bluetooth/WiFi or similar technologies would also be considered) in sensor technologies developed at the department.
• Develop sensor prototypes that can be embedded in healthcare products (e.g., wound dressings, diapers, etc.)
• Test the sensors in in-vitro, and at a later stage in animal models.
• Develop protocols/technologies for reading sensor signals. For instance, if the sensors are based on RFID signals, developed suitable VNA-based prototypes. If the sensors are based on the NFC protocol, developed suitable mobile phone apps. If the sensor communication is based on Bluetooth/WiFi like technologies, developed suitable apps/software for reading them.
• Test the sensors in in-vitro, and at a later stage in animal models.
• Perform every-day supervision of a number of PhD students working on these projects.
• Actively communicate and collaborate within the context of the project with a number of industrial partners.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants
Candidates must hold a PhD in Engineering, Physics or a similar field. Candidates with abilities of relevance for the tasks detailed above will be prioritized. Specific abilities that will be valued would be:

• Radio frequency electronics.
• Sensor development.
• Wireless communication protocols.
• Printed electronics.
• Electromagnetic modelling.
• 3D printing

Experience in all these criteria is not mandatory, but willingness to acquire them is a must. Fluency in English (understanding, speaking and writing) is also essential.

Form of employment and starting date
One-year position, starting as soon as possible.
