Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
We are seeking an ambitious postdoc to join our research group and conduct research on the effects of large-scale prescribed fires and fire-mimicking treatments on biodiversity. Our study focuses on saproxylic insects, which provide essential ecosystem services and are often threatened by structural forest degradation and the lack of fires in the landscape. This negative trend could possibly be mitigated through ecosystem restoration, but we need to understand how, where and when the restoration should be conducted, and which goals should be targeted. The project is conducted in tight collaboration with a Swedish forest company and aims to provide guidance to their nature conservation work.
In the project, you would work as a part of restoration ecology group together with several senior researchers, other postdocs and PhD-students. We provide a strong and collaborative research environment working on solutions to mitigate the biodiversity loss in forests through empirical studies and large-scale field experiments (see https://www.slu.se/en/departments/wildlife-fish-environmental-studies/research/research-areas/restoration-ecology/).

About the position
Duties: This two-year postdoc project concentrates on saproxylic insects, their diverse functions in the ecosystems and the structural variability caused by forest fires and fire-mimicking treatments. The duties of the postdoc are to plan and implement sampling of biodiversity data in these forests, analyse and report the results in scientific journals and conferences, forest industry meetings/workshops and in popular science articles together with other group members. We encourage the person to apply for additional funding to continue doing long-term research on the topic after the 2-year project.

Your profile
Qualifications: A successful candidate holds a doctoral degree in ecology, forestry or equivalent. Earlier research experience on forest fires or forest land-use in relation to biodiversity, especially on insects, is meriting. Good knowledge of community ecology and relevant statistical methodology in R is required, and good skills in GIS are beneficial. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required. The applicant must be able to take own initiatives and work both independently and in a group, and to organize work of field assistants. Driver's license (B) is required. We highly appreciate personal characteristics contributing to a positive development of our research group. Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow constitutes a merit-based employment for junior researchers, priority will be given to those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years. We are looking for a highly motivated person who is keen to contribute to the research field.
