SLU Swedish Species Information Centre is a national center for species and habitats. We contribute to a sustainable management of the natural resources by collecting, analyzing and make data available, and by describing and presenting facts about biodiversity. We interact nationally and internationally, with a conservation benefit in focus. Now we recruit a person who will research the conservation benefits of retention forestry for biodiversity and microclimate buffering.

Duties:
Your postdoc research project will focus on the conservation benefits of forest Norway spruce retention patches in central Sweden, in relation to clear-cut and mature forests. More specifically, you will analyze experimental and field-based data of growth and vitality of several bryophyte species and the lichen Lobaria pulmonaria in forest retention patches of different characteristics and age, in relation to microclimate and clear-cut and mature forests. The postdoc is one year, with possible extension for a second year. Your task the second year may also be to research the microclimatic buffering potential of retention patches, also including bryophyte responses to the 2018 summer drought. Field-based data and micro-climate data have already been collected within the project. Collaborating SLU departments are also the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies in Umeå and the Department of Ecology in Uppsala.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in ecology, forestry, environmental science or equivalent. Required is earlier research on forestry, biodiversity, or forest-microclimate interactions. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required. Good knowledge of statistical analyses and R (or equivalent programming) along with a strong publication record (in relation to the time since dissertation) is meriting. The applicant is supposed to be able to take own initiatives and work both independently and in a group. Important are also personal characteristics contributing to a positive development of a research group. Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow constitutes a merit-based employment for junior researchers, priority will be given to those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years. However, the time span is not a requirement - we are looking for a highly motivated person who is keen to contribute to the research field.

In the research collaboration at SLU Swedish Species Information Centre we interact in English. SLU Swedish Species Information Centre in general is, however, a largely Swedish-speaking workplace and collaboration with Swedish authorities and other Swedish actors takes place mainly in Swedish in speech and writing. SLU offers courses in Swedish at different levels.
