The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) is part of the Faculty of Forest Science, has about 50 employees and is based in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department conducts high-quality research and education at a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The main focus in Umeå is on value chains in the bio-based industry where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / refined, used and reused cost-effectively for various purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, focus is on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro level and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.
Background:
Through thermal treatment of bio-based raw materials and by-products, different types of carbonized materials with a variety of applications are created. However, most of these applications require the material to be presented in a physical form, e.g. as granules, to enable a practical application.
Tasks: This project develops and applies methods for granulation of carbonized biomaterials. The functionality of the product, primarily as an adsorbent, but possibly also for other applications, is analyzed in collaboration with other research groups. The goal is to generate basic data and new knowledge about methods for producing granules with favorable physical properties for each application area and to analyze how granulation affects the functionality of the material. The applicant is expected to take primary responsibility for the practical implementation of the project, data collection and modeling of results, as well as for scientific publication.
The project is being implemented within the research environments Bio4Energy (www.bio4energy.se) and Treesearch (www.treesearch.se). The employment is located in Umeå at the Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology and the experimental work is carried out at the Biomass Technology Center (www.slu.se/sbt/btc), the department's chemical laboratory, and at collaborative partners' laboratories.
Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is interested in a continued academic career in biomass technology. Applicants must have a doctoral degree, e.g. in the subject areas of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, material chemistry, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates who have graduated a maximum of three years before the end of the application period. The applicant must have a proven ability to independently initiate, conduct and complete research projects and create and publish the results in international scientific journals. Applicants must have excellent skills in written and oral communication in English, which should also be evident in peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations.
Place of work: Umeå, Sweden.
Type of employment: Fixed term employment of 12 months with possible prolongation.
Percentage of employment: 100%
Starting date: January 2019 or by agreement.
Application: We welcome your application no later than 2019-12-13, to apply use the link at the end of the document.
Applications must be written in English and contain i) Summary of research experience indicating the fulfilment of qualifications required for the position, ii) Curriculum Vitae including complete publication list clearly indicating peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications, iii) contact information for two reference persons.
