Materials Science is one of the focus areas of the faculty's research. The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Karlstad University offers degree-awarding programmes at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels. The department has a staff of around 20 people, including one professor, three associate professors, three lecturers and seven lecturers.
A post-doc position in materials engineering is now opened in the field of fatigue of metallic materials. Fatigue studies at the department have dealt with room temperature short crack studies, high temperature and thermal fatigue and recently fatigue in the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Our laboratory includes conventional servo-hydraulic tensile test machines, an induction heated thermal fatigue test rig and ultrasonic 20kHz fatigue test instruments. There is also a materials analysing laboratory with metallography equipment, FEG scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, atom force microscope, Auger analysis instrument, white light 3D surface profilometer, etc. Other techniques may be used as well.
The new post-doc in materials engineering will be a valuable addition to the research group in the mechanics and materials engineering department. Of particular interest for the present post-doc position is short crack growth behaviour and thermal fatigue studies, or the study of very high cycle fatigue. The duties of the position include mainly research, but other work tasks may occur, such as teaching, supervision and other research and development consultancies.
Starting date
1 September 2010 or upon agreement.
Length of employment
The post is a fixed-term full-time position and will last 24 months. Extension would be subject to additional external funding.
Qualifications and assessment criteria
For this position a doctoral degree is required in materials or mechanical engineering, materials science or in another related and for this project relevant discipline. The doctoral degree should on 1 August 2010 not be older than 3 years, unless there are special circumstances. Research experience with focus on materials testing and characterization, or theoretical modelling and numerical calculations, are strong assets. Additional experience in fatigue studies is valuable. Demonstrated ability to act as a liaison between academic and industrial partners and experience with the planning of research projects are advantages. Selection is on the basis of individual assessment.
