Post-doctoral position in Integrative Bioinformatics
For many livestock species there is a wealth of data considering DNA variation, transcriptomic variation and phenotypic records, both locally as well as in the public
domain. In our research, we want to go from DNA variation to phenotypic variation and back while we try to understand as much of the intermediate steps as possible. For this to be successful we need to integrate different type of livestock data as well as exploit public domain databases on human and model species. Data integration methods are not as well
developed for livestock species compared to human and model organisms. With this new post we aim to establish the tools and procedures to study livestock genetics at a systems
level.
Duties: The responsibilities include to provide added value to, and generate novel hypotheses from, ongoing research results at the department. This will be achieved by mining public domain databases (e.g. GENEREF, STRING, PUBMED, OMIM) from a variety of species for enrichments with regards to a set of experimental results or a particular phenotype. This will typically generate a list of candidate genes for further study, or a
starting point for studying a complex trait in more biological detail. You will develop and implement procedures to prioritize candidate genes from a given gene set on the basis of
phenotypic relevance. This will involve text mining, significance testing and data integration. The gene set could be: 1) an entire genome, 2) a set of differentially expressed genes from a gene expression study or 3) one or more QTL regions with an
effect on the trait of interest. The position includes interact with scientists across the department and show initiative in bringing different research strands together to form new hypotheses and research areas. The areas to which this new post could contribute include lactation biology, infectious diseases such as mastitis, reproduction biology, behavior as well as many of the ongoing QTL experiments and GWAS studies.
Qualifications: The candidate should have a PhD in Bioinformatics, Genetics or a closely related discipline with demonstrated experience in integrating data across multiple
databases and biological hierarchies. The succesful applicant should be able to write extensive computer scripts and practical knowledge of one or more programming languages would be a strength. Experience with livestock genetics would be a bonus. The postholder will interact with a large group of scientists with varying research background which requires excellent communication skills in English.
Form of employment: Temporary employment, two-years fulll-time position
Starting date: By agreement
