The Department of Clinical Sciences
The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral position in Veterinary Epidemiology.

Our research in Veterinary Epidemiology focuses on applying state-of-the-art epidemiological and statistical methods to study and understand the distribution of health, disease, injury, death and performance in animal populations. We incorporate welfare and social sciences (including economics) to increase the relevance and societal value of the research. The unit successfully studies antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance, and infectious and production diseases in farm animals. We have also evaluated and utilized databases on animal diseases, and studied the epidemiology of injuries and diseases in sport and companion animals.

We now initiate two research projects on "Good animal welfare - gains for animals, farmers and society" and we are offering a post-doctoral position that will focus on beef production. The projects are conducted in close collaboration with the research group "Agricultural and Food Economics" in the Department of Economics, SLU, which is currently recruiting two post-doctoral positions where one is related to efficiency and productivity in agriculture and one to animal health economics. The research also means collaboration with Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), UK, Lincoln University, NZ, and other departments at SLU.

Duties:
The successful applicant is expected to (1) conduct research as set out in the project plan, (2) actively, and through own initiatives, contribute to the group's research in this field, and (3) eventually apply for external research funding. You may also be expected to supervise students' theses at all levels.

Qualifications:
The successful applicant should have a background in (agricultural) economics, with an interest in the interrelationship between livestock management, animal health and economic outcomes, and experiences of multidisciplinary approaches.

We are looking for a highly motivated applicant who can work both independently and in teams, is used to taking own initiatives, and has documented experience in publishing research in high quality scientific journals. Very good English skills (in both writing and speech) are required, and familiarity with ethical reflections on animal welfare and production economics is a merit. Your personal characteristics are also important.

Place of work:
Uppsala

Form of employment:
A temporary position for two years.

Extent:
100%

Starting date:
Specific date to be discussed, but ideally 1 October, 2018
