Social and Economic Geography is concerned with the world's peoples and how their lives and activities are influenced by distance to natural resources, other activities and other people. The department provides a spatial perspective on demographic, economic, social and cultural conditions and processes, from the local to the global. For further information about the department see:
http://www8.umu.se/soc_econ_geography/Agglomeration is central to much work in economic geography. The benefits of co-location have traditionally been related to different kinds of cost reductions, but recently scholars have emphasised advantages triggered by social interaction and learning. Long-term competitiveness is found to be based on innovation processes where skilled labour is becoming increasingly important. In this post-doc project the successful candidate is expected to continue our research on how different processes of spillover (e.g. via job changes and spin-offs) trigger knowledge dissemination influencing firm performance and regional development. Since the research will be based on longitudinal micro data and quantitative analyses, advanced skills in statistical modelling are required. Moreover, having documented experience in teaching undergraduate in economic geography, spatial planning and GIS courses is desired.
Candidates who have a PhD in Human Geography with no more than three years postdoctoral experience prior to the application date are eligible to apply. While pursuing a strategy of high profile international publication, the successful applicant should be committed to contribute to the scientific discourse within the department and are expected to mainly be at the Umeå campus.
The position is a full-time position for one (1) year and is chiefly intended for research, but may also require teaching (maximum up to one fifth).
The application should include a resumé and certified copies of any degrees and grades. Provide a short written description of your scientific work and teaching experience. In addition, provide two copies of your scientific work and other documentation as desired (no more than five major publications). Please, state the desired date for commencing the position and include names and contact details of two suitable academic referee persons.
When considering the applicants the equality law, the university equality policy and the department policy will be followed.
