Department of Plant Biology
This project is about red clover, the number one forage legume in Scandinavia. The work has the long-term aim to improve resistance against soil-borne pathogens. The work spans from analysis of microbes present in field samples to gene functional analysis. The project is part of a larger breeding initiative "Grogrund" for more information, see https://www.slu.se/centrumbildningar-och-projekt/grogrund/, and involves collaboration with groups working on genomic selection and applied breeding.

The Department of Plant Biology is one of three more basic research-intensive departments at Uppsala Biocenter https://www.slu.se/en/faculties/nj/this-is-the-nj-faculty/cluster/uppsala-biocenter/. The Biocenter also has developed tight ties with the national SciLife Laboratory platforms in Uppsala and Stockholm on various NGS analysis, microscopy and bioinformatics. The Plant Biology department is a partner of the Linnean Center for Plant Biology in Uppsala. The mission of the department is to develop basic knowledge about genomic, developmental and defense processes of importance for plants. In these areas the work focuses on genetic, cellular and molecular research, addressing questions fundamental for the biology of whole plants, and of interactions between plants and other organisms. For further details, see https://www.slu.se/institutioner/vaxtbiologi-skogsgenetik/

Duties:
The work range from sample collection to determine the soil organisms i.e. to clarify the pathogens behind the root disease(s) using metagenomic approaches, dissection of contrasting plant responses using RNA-seq followed by functional analysis of candidate genes. In parallel, interactions with plant breeders is part of the project and may include support on disease screening methods, marker development and selection of red clovers with high resistance levels and nitrogen-fixation capacity.

Qualifications:
The applicant should have a deep interest in plant defense mechanisms, and hold a PhD degree in molecular biology with emphasis on: NGS technologies applied on microorganisms/plants, plant defense responses or equivalent knowledge that the employer judges to be equivalent. Additional knowledge of bioinformatics, advanced microscopy, and gene functional analysis are meritorious.

Great emphasis eill pe placed on personal qualities such as creativity, motivation and drive. Good knowledge of English in both speech and writing is a prerequisite. Candidates should also have an ability to conduct independent research, take initiative, ask pertinent scientific questions, and interact with other scientists.

Place of work:
Uppsala

Form of employment:
Fixed term employment of 24 months, with possible extension.
