On 1st January 2010, Linnaeus University opened its doors for the first time as Sweden's newest university, the result of a merger between Kalmar University and Växjö University.The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of Marine Ecology, Microbiology, Zoonotic Ecology, Evolutionary Ecology, Environmental Sciences.

The marine ecology group seeks a Post Doctoral researcher for management and research in projects within the context of using marine microalgae as bioenergy source and its potential applications in temperate climate zones. The position is for two years, and located in Kalmar.

Project title: Evaluation of high value products from algal biomass

The research project: The position is connected to research projects where microalgae biomass production is used to reduce emissions from industrial exhausts and sewage. Further, the algal biomass produced is evaluated as carbon neutral biofuels or other high value products, such as pigments, Omega-3 fatty acids and peptides. The project includes collaborations with business enterprise and regional companies and authorities so good communication skills and experience in working with various stakeholders and maintaining a network are required. The position will include field and laboratory work in algal chemistry and physiology and molecular ecology. Documented experience in all areas of importance is required.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in aquatic or marine ecology or in a subject area of relevance for the present project and have experience of supervising students. Written and oral communication skills in English and Swedish are also essential. Priority will be given to experience in large-scale algal systems, an extensive knowledge of the Baltic Sea pelagic ecosystem and marine primary and secondary production. B-drivers license is required.
