About Malmö University
Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the center of Malmö. We have around 1 800 employees and about 25 000 students and thereby one of Sweden's largest universities. Our research and education are characterized by the role we believe a university should play in an open society, which is to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority. Our researchers and students work in collaboration to create, share and spread knowledge in order to understand, explain and develop society.

Malmö University is organized into five faculties: Faculty of Health and Society, Culture and Society, Education and Society, Faculty of Odontology and Technology and Society.

Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces
The present position will be a part of the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces, which is a large academic environment at Malmö University spanning several departments. The overall objective of Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces is to produce high-quality front-line research within the biomedical field, to offer relevant and attractive educational programs, and to maintain good reciprocal relations with partner industries and the public sector. The center today comprises four research groups (60 researchers) and offers a translational network for applied research, in collaboration with regional industry. The center expertise covers the range from mathematical modelling to clinical sciences.

About the position
Protein-based therapeutics are becoming increasingly popular in medicine. Compared to low molecular drugs, they are more specific, cause fewer side effects and are environmentally friendly. They are however more sensitive to the conditions of the surroundings and need to be specially formulated to preserve their structure and function. Another challenge in designing protein formulations is to provide slow release of proteins during extended time. In this project we will investigate interactions of proteins with carbohydrate - based drug delivery vehicles: starch microparticles. In the excess of water, proteins partition between starch microparticles and surrounding liquid. We explore different approaches for controlling the release rate of proteins from starch microparticles.

To stabilize proteins in the formulations they can be dried. In the absence of excipients, the proteins can however change their structure, which may influence their stability. In this part of the project, we will perform studies of structure of proteins imbedded in starch microparticles in the solid state. Furthermore, mechanisms of destabilization of proteins in the solid state and the effects of residual moisture will be investigated. The project will be performed in collaboration between Malmö University and two companies: Magle Chemoswed and Adroit Science.

Apart from carrying out research within these areas the applicant is expected to take responsibility for the maintenance of the instruments involved and to be active by supervising graduate and postgraduate students and fellow scientists in the techniques and participate in teaching at graduate and postgraduate levels. In addition, the applicant will be expected to take part in applications for external funding to support research activities.
