Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the centre of Malmö. We have around 1,800 employees and 24,000 students. Our research and education are characterised by the role we believe a university should play in an open society - to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority. Our researchers and students work collaboratively to create, share and spread knowledge in order to understand, explain and develop society - both locally and globally.
The Faculty of Health and Society
The education and research activities at the Faculty contribute with the knowledge useful to preserve, support and promote people's physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science in technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry.
Department of Biomedical science
The Department of Biomedical Science offers a programme leading to a professional qualification, Biomedical Scientist (first cycle, 180 credits), and a Masters' programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second cycle, 120 credits), as well as first and second cycle freestanding courses. The Department negotiates the multifaceted intersection between biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, and technology and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject matter. Drawing on the balance between pure and applied research, the Department has been successful in attracting funding from regional, national, and international research funding bodies. In addition, in the pursuit of possible applications, several industry funded contract research projects are currently running at the Department.
About the position
The project is a collaborative effort between industry experts and researchers at Malmö University, where the main technological objective of the project is to design and test high performance, low cost, so-called solar biosupercapacitors, which can be reproducibly manufactured with industry-scale throughput. Solar biosupercapacitors were recently discovered by Malmö University researchers and their collaborative partners. Biological catalysts were used to generate electrical energy from the sun, which could be stored directly in the same device.
However, current bioelectronic devices based on nanostructured electrodes cannot be produced in an expedient and, importantly, readily scalable and reproducible way. This is because existing industrial technologies for nanofabrication are rarely used in research laboratories, and industrial exposure to biomaterial based elements is limited. In this project, nanoimprint lithography, will be used to design low cost solar biosupercapacitators. Nanoimprint lithography is an industrially relevant technique capable of achieving nano- and micro-scale features reproducibly, scalably, and economically.
Required qualifications and critical assessment of the applicants
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. As an applicant, you must have a PhD degree in chemistry, biology or biomedical science. You are expected to hold a Swedish PhD degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
In ranking the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on knowledge in biochemistry, practical experience in enzymology, and deep understanding of bioelectrochemistry. Previous experience in biosupercapacitors is highly valued. In addition, excellent knowledge of English is required. Swedish language skills are not required, however.
