Job Description
In the context of the Swedish project MERGE (ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system,
http://www.miljovetenskap.lu.se/merge) , the objective is to establish and optimize links between the chemical transport model of EMEP (the European Monitoring and Evaluation Program,
http://www.emep.int) and the LPJ (Lund-Potsdam-Jena) ecosystem model (for more information, see below). The main jobs are (1) to improve biosphere-chemistry interactions in the EMEP model via links to the LPJ ecosystem model, and (2) validation of the biomass predictions of LPJ and other databases via the use of remote sensing data.
The LPJ model is central to the EC-Earth climate modelling system, which is in use in several countries, and which has been adopted in Sweden for its main efforts within climate modelling. This model simulates the growth of ecosystems on a global scale. The EMEP model is a chemical transport model which simulates tropospheric chemistry, usually on the European scale but increasingly on either local or global scales. Linking these two models is an important step to being able to calculate how future climates and CO2 changes will affect vegetation growth and atmospheric composition.
At Chalmers, methods and algorithms for estimation of above ground forest biomass from remote sensing data are being developed. The main research focus is on space as well as air borne radar systems, but other techniques are also considered. This research is conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Forest Resource Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. One of the tasks in the post-doctoral research project will be to use estimated forest biomass from remote sensing data to validate the simulated biomass from LPJ and other databases on a regional scale.
The work would be conducted at Chalmers, but in strong cooperation with the LPJ group at the University of Lund.
The position is available for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension.
Required Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD in Natural Sciences or Engineering, preferably with some experience in ecosystem/air chemistry modelling or remote sensing. Experience in programming (Fortran, MATLAB, C++, python) is also advantageous.
