The Department of Physics has about 100 employees. Among them are 13 professors, 28 lecturers, about 45 PhD students and post docs, and 15 technical/administrative staff. The department is involved in undergraduate and graduate education, and research. Active research areas include space physics, plasma physics, general relativity, nonlinear physics, condensed matter physics, optical physics, nanotechnology, photonics, biological physics, complex networks, and physics didactics. For more information, see www.physics.umu.se/english/research/.

The postdoc project will focus on investigating energy and mass transfer processes within the plasma sheet of the Earth's magnetotail. It is well known that bursty bulk flows (BBFs) play an important role in the magnetotail, but there are still large gaps in the understanding of details important for the transfer processes, and for the subsequent energy and mass transport within the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. Analysis of data is an essential part of the work, and experience from combining advanced data analysis with theoretical modeling is an advantage, as are strong computer programming skills. The postdoc will analyze data from several spacecraft missions, ground based observatories, and possibly also laboratory plasma experiments. Concepts such as BBFs, dipolarization fronts, energy conversion, reconnection, and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling are central for the postdoc project.

The project will be implemented in extensive collaboration within a network of scientists from Umeå University, from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, and from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna, as well as from other national and international teams. Regular visits to KTH, IRF and other teams are planned.

Time period: Full time (100%) during 2 years. Starting date upon agreement.

We are seeking a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is passionate for developing as an individual scientist as well as a space physics research team member. To qualify for the position, you should have a PhD degree in space or magnetospheric physics, or equivalent, preferentially completed within the past three years. You should have considerable experience from analyzing spacecraft data and/or ground based data (radars, magnetometers, imagers etc.) with relevant tools (e.g. MATLAB and/or IDL). Experience in handling and analyzing THEMIS or Cluster data is a merit. Good skills in using programming tools such as those mentioned above and/or C, as well as in written and spoken English, are required. An ability to pursue independent research and work as a member of a team is required, as well as good skills in writing science publication for renowned journals. You are also expected to have good social competence.

The application can be submitted either electronically (in word- or pdf format) or in hard-copy form (2 copies). Applicants should submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a Curriculum Vitae, (3) a statement of previous research achievements, teaching merits, and the level of expertise in the areas mentioned in the job description above, (4) a publication list, (5) a research plan showing how your research can be linked to the job description, (6) names and contact information of 3 references, and (7) copies of relevant degree certificates and publications.
