Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Department of Forest Ecology and Management Faculty of Forest Sciences, Umeå, Sweden
Post-doc position
SLU invites applications for the following 2-year Post-doc position:
Modeling the mobility of radionuclides on a catchment scale
The positions are both fully financed for two years and will be based at the new and dynamic department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU, Umeå, Sweden. Umeå is located in the boreal forest (c. 15 km from the Baltic Sea and 300 km from the Scandinavian mountain range on the border to Norway). Our major research focus is on the boreal forest, but we have activities also in other biomes. The department has about 80 members of staff out of which 14 are professors. We have the highest ambitions in science and teaching, excellent international contacts, modern technical facilities and access to unique long-term forest ecosystem experiments and other field sites. SLU in Umeå shares Campus with Umeå University (www.umu.se). Umeå has 110 000 inhabitants, located a one-hour flight from Stockholm.
This 2-year post-doc position will focus on improving existing modelling tools for determining the long-term fate of radionuclides on a landscape scale and within a heterogeneous boreal landscape. To do this, the candidate will initially apply a mechanistic model approach in a well defined boreal soil/stream interface in northern Sweden. The purpose is to better characterize the processes that determine the accumulation and mobility of radionuclides in that boreal environment. This information will then be used to improve a simple partition coefficient model approach by adding dependence of mineral and organic characteristics that may be used in other boreal landscapes. The project is funded by the SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company).
The applicants should hold a PhD in chemistry or soil science or equivalent not older than two years. The candidate for this position should have a broad knowledge of soil science and a solid background in hydrogeochemistry. Any experience in thermodynamic modelling of reactions at the solid-liquid interface is considered as a merit. The majority of the work will be based at SLU in Umeå, Sweden but extended periods will also be spent at Graz University of Technology in Austria. For more information, contact Hjalmar Laudon (E-mail: hjalmar.laudon@seksko.slu.se , Phone: +46 90 786 85 84) or Stephan Köhler (E-mail: koehler@tugraz.at or Phone: +43 316 873 63 63).
SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The university applies individual salary negotiations.
Your complete application, marked with reference number 317/09 should be sent to the Register, SLU, Box 7070 - 750 07 UPPSALA, or e-mail: registrator@slu.se , to arrive April 15, 2009 at the latest.
SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment and information extension.
SLU has 3 000 employees, 5 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The 18 departments at the faculty are organised in four clusters. Most of the departments and the faculty office are located in Uppsala, 65 km north of Stockholm, but important activities are also carried out in Umeå, Skara, and Grimsö.
